After a very successful first edition, some of director Hayao Miyazaki’s most famous films return to the cinema. Here are the appointments
Great news for lovers of the world of Studio Ghibli. Some of his greatest hits, created by the master of animation Hayao Miyazaki, will return to the hall to fill our summer evenings with magic. The review, entitled A world of animated dreamsorganized by Lucky Redwill bring back five films that have contributed to making the director’s name one of the most established in the world of animation and beyond. The event will start on July 6th and end on August 30th. Here are the five chosen titles.
Ponyo on the cliff, from July 6th to 12th | A world of animated dreams: Hayao Miyazaki’s films return to cinemas
The review opens with a film that turns 15 this year; it is about Ponyo on the cliff. The film tells the adventures of a little fish, Ponyo, who is picked up by Sosuke, a boy who finds her on the beach, with her head stuck inside a jam jar and decides to take care of her. A great friendship soon arises between the two, who however has to deal with those who would like Ponyo to return home, to the depths of the sea. Based on the short story Yes Yes Yesby the Japanese writer Rieko Nakagawa, the film was presented, in competition, at the 65th Venice Film Festival. Ponyo on the cliff will return to the room from 6 to 12 July.
Kiki – Home delivery, from 13 to 19 July | A world of animated dreams: Hayao Miyazaki’s films return to cinemas
The review continues with a 1989 film, Kiki – Home delivery. We will follow the adventures of Kiki, a thirteen year old girl who is nothing more than a witch. Forced to follow the family tradition, Kiki moves away from her home to find a new city to settle in. She will arrive in a seaside town, where she will meet Osono, a baker who will give her a roof over her head and a job in home delivery of parcels. Kiki – Home Delivery, based on the novel of the same name by Eiko Kadonowill be in the cinema from 13 to 19 July. If you are looking for a film for the whole family, delicate but which hides important themes in itself, such as the transition from childhood to adulthood, the story of this little witch is just what she does for you.
The castle in the sky, from July 27th to August 2nd | A world of animated dreams: Hayao Miyazaki’s films return to cinemas
The third appointment of the review is the one with The castle in the sky, from 1986. It is the story of little Sheeta, a girl forced by the evil Colonel Muska to live a prisoner in an airship. One night, their means of transport is attacked by a band of pirates, led by Dola, with the aim of taking possession of the pendant that the girl wears around her neck, capable of fighting gravity. Castle in the Sky, awarded in Japan as best animated film of 1986is the first work born after the creation of the highly acclaimed Studio Ghibli. If you are looking for a breathtaking adventure, in the skies, you shouldn’t miss this film, now in theaters from 27 July to 2 August.
My Neighbor Totoro August 10-16 | A world of animated dreams: Hayao Miyazaki’s films return to cinemas
The journey through Miyazaki’s masterpieces continues with My Neighbor Totoro. The film, from 1988, tells the story of two sisters, Satsuki and Mei, who arrive with their father in a small country village, in order to be closer to their mother, who is hospitalized. Arrived on site, the two little sisters will discover a magical world, inhabited by creatures they never thought they’d meet. Entered the list of Empire’s 500 Greatest Movies in Historythe film was a real success with critics and audiences. From 10 to 16 August you can enjoy this unmissable adventure, starring the character featured in the Studio Ghibli logo.
The wind rises, from 24 to 30 August | A world of animated dreams: Hayao Miyazaki’s films return to cinemas
The review will conclude with another unmissable classic of Miyazaki’s animation, The wind rises. Dated 2013, the film tells of Jiro, who has the dream of flying and designing planes. Myopic since birth, he was soon forced to fight to achieve his dream, because he was unable to become a pilot. In 1927 he manages to get hired in one of the main Japanese aeronautical engineering companies, where he will finally be able to prove his worth. Presented in competition at 70th Venice International Film FestivalThe Wind Rises is regarded as a portrayal, if often imaginative, of the life of Jirō Horikoshi, the designer and inventor of the Mitsubishi A5M and Mitsubishi A6M Zero fighter aircraft used by the Imperial Japanese Navy during World War II. The award-winning film will be available in theaters from 24 to 30 August.
Events not to be missed
In short, this summer promises to be truly fantastic for Miyazaki lovers. The past edition had been a real success, with over 1 million euros in revenue.
