They are well 379 Amazon projects currently active in the field of sustainability environmental globally. The e-commerce giant has in fact launched another 71 initiatives, all linked to renewable energy, including 5 in Italy. The number of activities in Europe therefore exceeds 100 and, according to company spokespersons, it is only destined to rise.
The total number of activated projects will generate 50.000 gigawattora (GWh) of clean energy. This is the equivalent ofenergy needed to power 13.4 million homes in Europe every year.
The new Amazon projects for sustainability also land in South America and Italy
These include the company’s first renewable energy project in South America, a photovoltaic park in Brazil and the first photovoltaic parks in India and Poland.
“We are activating new wind and photovoltaic projects to power our offices, our distribution centers, our data centers and our stores, which together serve millions of customers globally, and we are on track to power our operations with 100% renewable energy by 2025“, he has declared Adam Selipsky, CEO di Amazon Web Services.
In Italy they will be activated 5 projects related to sorting depots present in the cities of Parma, Pisa, Perugia, Palermo and Cagliari. These will allow to generate, respectively, an energy capacity of 135 kW, 182 kW, 128 kW, 99 kW and 110 kW. The 5 new projects join the 12 already active in Italy, thus bringing the number of Amazon photovoltaic activities in Italy to 17 on-site projects. All for a total capacity of 9 MW. To these must be added the 3 off-site photovoltaic projects, which will have a total capacity of 106 MW.
Dal Climate Pledge del 2019 all’iniziativa Beyond the Megawatt
To help grow the benefits of investments in the renewable energy sector, Amazon is also working through the initiative Beyond the Megawatt of the Clean Energy Buyers Institute (CEBI) to ensure that the sector maximizes the economic, environmental and social impact of energy purchases.
Amazon’s numerous and constant efforts for environmental sustainability were confirmed in 2019, when the company co-founded The Climate Pledge. With the initiative Amazon is committed to reaching zero CO2 emissions by 2040, 10 years earlier than established by the Paris Agreement. To date, Pledge now has more than 375 signatories, including other giants such as Best Buy, IBM, Microsoft, PepsiCo, Siemens, Unilever, Verizon and Visa.
Amazon ordered 100,000 electric delivery vehicles which are already on the road in the United States. This is the largest order of its kind. The company is also investing $ 2 billion in the development of services and solutions for the decarbonization through the Climate Pledge Fund.
