Anime Breakfast: Dungeon Food in a tasty review

In this new episode of Anime Breakfast we want to talk to you, in a short review, about Dungeon Food, an animated series currently in progress and available on Netflix

The spring season of anime simulcasts is about to begin and there will be many new proposals arriving (here, for example, you can find those from Crunchyroll!). Many others, however, will continue from the previous one such as, for example, Dungeon Food (in Japanese Dungeon Meshi, also known as Delicious in Dungeon). Fantasy started January 2024, produced by Trigger and broadcast in simulcast every Thursday on Netflix, Dungeon Food is the adaptation of Ryoko Kui's manga of the same name and we'll tell you about it in this quick dedicated review, as well as a new episode of Anime Breakfast (here's the complete list!).

How hungry!

The story introduces us to Laios, a young adventurer who travels in the Guardian's Labyrinth, a real Dungeon, together with his troop made up of Marcille and Falin, two sorceresses and Chilchuck the thief. During the first episode, the group encounters a powerful red dragon who easily defeats them and devours Falin, who is also the sister of Laios. Throughout the first part of Dungeon Food the objective is therefore only one: chasing that gigantic red dragon to try to save Falin.

Senshi means warrior | Review Dungeon Food

During the adventure, the group meets Senshi, a bounty hunter passionate about cooking who goes around with a steel pot and all the tools of the chef's trade. And what to eat in a dungeon that barely allows the proliferation of life, due to the large quantity of monsters present? Exactly: the monsters themselves. The purely fantasy component of the work is also mixed with the more “food porn” component which the most passionate will remember having already been able to taste (pun intended, ed.) with the Food Wars series. The representation of the various dishes presents an accentuated aesthetic that is clearly intentional and almost aims to make us hungry.

We won't talk further about the plot, because, let's admit it, Dungeon Food has a rather simple, linear and simple structure, although it is rich in original and entertaining ideas throughout the episodes. The various scenes are rendered by a well-characterized and, above all, well-blended cast of characters that they present distinct personalities and, especially, a great foundation of humor. Humor which, together with fantasy and good food, undeniably makes Dungeon Food a light series that can be appreciated by all, more enjoyable if taken in small doses.

Laios?

A little curiosity about Laios: its name derives from Laius, a king of Thebes known to those who chew Greek mythology as the father of Oedipus. Exactly, the very one who later married his own mother, Jocasta. Now, if we want to listen to the symbolists, this could very well mean that our adventurer will have to deal with a tragedy and betrayal, but perhaps we are nitpicking, especially for an anime like Dungeon Food.

Animations and character design | Dungeon Food Review

Let's talk a little about the technical side of Trigger production. The animation style is lively and colorful and has a soft and very detailed line, which does justice to both the character designs, all iconic and very recognisable, and that of the various monsters they encounter. The animations work, they are very fluid and refined, both in the action scenes and in those of daily life. Furthermore, as regards the character design, created by the hand of Naoki Takeda, we are faced with a captivating and original production, which does justice to the same originality of the concept underlying Dungeon Food.

In some situations, CGI is used, but as the Trigger studio has accustomed us to over the years, this it never feels intrusive or dystonic compared to the rest of the scene. Finally, Yoshihiro Miyajima's direction is effective and dynamic, and manages to make the best of whatever scene is represented.

Soundtrack and dubbing | Dungeon Food Review

The soundtrack, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda and Shunshuke Tsuchiya, is pleasant and adapts well to all the various facets, moments and atmospheres of the series. Furthermore, the opening is one of the most beautiful things we've ever seen in recent times. Go enjoy it. On Netflix, Dungeon Food is also available with Italian dubbing (and in other languages) and, although we admit having seen it entirely with the original dubbing, we reviewed the first episode to evaluate the Italian adaptation and the choice of voice actors seems excellent to us , with voices that manage to coherently convey emotions and, above all, the personality of the character himself.

Good lunch!

We have therefore reached the final lines of this quick review of Dungeon Food, as well as the weekly episode of Anime Breakfast. Although we are faced with a simple series, with a rather classic, basic and phone-based narrative, the Trigger series still manages to capture attention thanks, first and foremost, to the mix of genres which, in a global context, make it decidedly enjoyable. If we then add a good technical sector in line with the company's other productions and well-characterised characters, you will understand why we can only recommend watching it. In small doses, however, perhaps one dose a day while you are eating. It will work up an appetite (maybe)!
