Anime Breakfast: Haikyuu!! and life lessons from a volleyball court

In this new episode of Anime Breakfast we are going to analyze Haikyuu!! together, much more than a sports series set on a volleyball field: a real life lesson

If last week we wanted to focus on what are, in our opinion, the five best shonen anime of recent years, in this new episode of Anime Breakfast (here is the complete list of episodes!) we move to talk to you only about one anime shonen, of the sports genre, and which we have not yet mentioned despite the many episodes that have passed: Haikyuu!! And also given that the new film will arrive in Italian cinemas at the end of May thanks to Crunchyroll… It just seems like the perfect opportunity.

Imagination | Anime Breakfast: Haikyuu!!

Haikyu!! is a shonen manga written and illustrated by Haruichi Furudate, published in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from February 20, 2012 to July 20, 2020. The series has been enormously successful, with over 50 million copies sold worldwide, and has been adapted into a highly successful anime, with four seasons and a film, the one we were talking about above, coming out.

The story follows the events of Shoyo Hinata, a young student who has been passionate about volleyball since he was a child. Despite his small stature, Hinata has great energy and an exceptional leap. After joining the Karasuno High School volleyball club, Hinata begins her climb to successalong with a team of new friends and rivals.

In addition to Hinata, the young and energetic protagonist of the series, the Karasuno team is obviously made up of other members, all recognizable and now iconic. Tobio Kageyama he is one of Karasuno's setters, a volleyball genius with such natural talent that he is nicknamed “the King of the Court” for his ability to control the game. Daichi SawamuraInstead, he is the captain of the team, a wise and reliable leader as well as a skilled defender.

Koshi Sugawara he is the vice-captain of Karasuno, as well as an expert setter and an excellent strategist, an altruist who always puts the good of the team first. Kei Tsukishima He is of a completely different character, however: haughty and sarcastic, Kei is still the best spiker on the team and has an excellent vision of the game. In the end, Tadashi Yamaguchi: a shy and insecure boy, but with a truly powerful serve.

One day | Anime Breakfast: Haikyuu!!

Already from the composition of the team you will have realized how varied the world of Haikyuu!! is, as well as its themes. The first, which also serves as its founding principle, is definitely the perseverance. Hinata and her teammates encounter numerous challenges during their journey, and will often be gripped by the sense of helplessness due to defeats against opponents terribly stronger than them. However, Karasuno does not give up, but continues to work hard and, indeed, with perseverance to achieve the set objectives. And just think about how much perseverance it takes for someone as short as Hinata to want to become a volleyball ace!

In addition to being a sports series, Haikyuu!! it is above all a story rich in personal growth, a true metaphor of life on a volleyball court. All the characters, from Hinata himself to his teammates, grow and learn both as players and as people, developing new skills not only sporting, but also human.

Another of the founding principles of Haikyuu!! and obviously, team work. Volleyball is a sport entirely based on this concept, and Karasuno's victory or defeat depends almost entirely on the collaboration and mutual support of the players, as well as the intrinsic abilities of the athletes. Players will therefore have to learn to put aside their individuality to work together.

In addition to these three founding principles, Haikyuu!! it is a concentrate of passion, rivalry, pressure and sacrificea collection of universal themes that can be appreciated by a heterogeneous audience of all ages.

Fly high! | Anime Breakfast: Haikyuu!!

On a technical level, Haikyuu!! It performs excellently. Susumu Mitsunaka's direction is infallible, because basically there is a great ability to capture the fast-paced action of volleyball and create exciting and engaging scenes. The animations are also excellent, but with a studio like Production IG behind us we couldn't expect anything less: pure fluidity and realism, the best possible way to do justice to the beauty of the game of volleyball.

The soundtrack is composed by Yuki Hayashi and is as engaging as it gets adapt perfectly to the different atmospheres of the series: adrenaline during the matches, emotion in the most touching moments, and general involvement of the public at every episode.

This episode of Anime Breakfast dedicated to Haikyuu ends here!! with the more than dispassionate advice to recover it all, in its entirety, on Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll, find the links at the bottom of the article. Both because at the end of May you will be able to go and see the film at the cinema, but above all because you will find yourself experiencing a story of personal growth set on a volleyball court, and not a simple and banal sports anime.
