Apple apre le porte agli emulatori di giochi retrò sull'App Store thumbnail

Apple opens the doors to retro game emulators on the App Store

Whether due to a change in strategy or pressure from the European Union, Apple is relaxing its strict rules on the App Store, opening the door to retro game emulators and offering new options for music streaming apps in the European Union.

iPhone, retro game emulators arrive on the App Store

With the latest update of the guidelines, Apple has announced that retro game emulators will be available on the App Store globally, allowing you to offer downloadable games. However, the company has specified that such apps will have to comply “all applicable laws“, thus banning pirated titles.

This change could allow retro console emulators already present on Android to bring their apps to iPhone too. Until now, game emulators were banned from iOS, forcing users to resort to workarounds such as jailbreaking. Also to play legally purchased titles.

As The Verge points out, in addition to emulators, Apple has also updated the rules on “super app” like WeChat, establishing that the minigames and miniapps within them will have to use HTML5 rather than being native apps. The move appears to be a response to antitrust pressure from the United States and the European Union. Apple recently started allowing cloud game streaming services on the App Store as well.

In the EU, Apple announced that music streaming apps will be able to include in-app links for external purchases and mention pricing information. However, Spotify is not satisfied as Apple still expects commissions on external purchases, despite requests from the European Commission. The situation, therefore, remains in development: we will keep you updated.
