Tesla focuses on Robotaxis, announced this summer

According to a Reuters report (via Multiplayer), Tesla has abandoned plans to build acheap electric car, long promised and with an estimated price starting at $25,000. Musk had recently expressed optimism regarding the possible introduction of this by the second half of 2025.

The robotaxi announcement came shortly after that Musk rejected Reuters' accusations concerning the abandonment of economy car plans. In an initial post on X, the CEO denied the report's claims, only to confirm, a few hours later, the presentation of the robotaxi on August 8th.

Rumors about the two projects, the affordable electric car and the robotaxi, have been circulating for years, with Musk's priorities seeming to oscillate between one and the other. According to rumors, Tesla would have adopted a new approach for its robotaxi, eliminating radar and other sensors and opting for a system based exclusively on cameras, unlike other robotaxi companies. It remains to evaluate its effectiveness and, above all, its safety.

With the announcement of the robotaxi, Tesla appears to have chosen to focus on this technology rather than an affordable electric car for the mass market. Despite Musk's promises about autonomous driving in years past, the company has yet to make a vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals. The August 8 event could finally reveal Tesla's progress in this ambitious project.
