Battlefield: new games and an interconnected “game universe”?

EA recently talked about their new projects (and possibly new games) involving the future and the Battlefield universe

As part of a major study change announced by EA today, the giant has signaled its intention to create a “interconnected Battlefield universe“(This could possibly allude to the arrival of new games). The recently launched Battlefield 2042 isn’t getting the response that Electronic Arts hoped for, but the publisher plans to expand the franchise in a big way. As much as Activision has integrated its annual Call of Duty releases with CoD Mobile and Warzone, it seems EA wants to increase the importance of Battlefield and that could include new games from studios including Ripple Effect.

Battlefield: The “new projects” related to the saga may not necessarily be new games

Speaking with GameSpot, Vince Zampella, the co-founder of Respawn who is now also overseeing the Battlefield, explained that the intent here is not to replace Battlefield 2042 or “churn out” new games in the short term, but rather create an “interconnected Battlefield universe”:

We will continue to evolve and grow Battlefield 2042, and will explore new types of experiences and business models along the way that we can add to those foundations to provide a fantastic range of experiences for our players. In this universe, the world is interconnected with shared characters and narrative. This universe is also built with our community as we leverage the power of the portal and user-generated content that puts creativity in the hands of our players.

At this point, the plans of the interconnected universe still seem rather vague. We already know that Battlefield Mobile is coming from Industrial Toys, the studio co-founded by former Bungie president Alex Seropian, and EA recently hinted that a new free Battlefield game could arrive in the future, though Zampella hasn’t confirmed any specific plans.

Beyond that, there is at least one other possible title in the works from Ripple Effect (formerly DICE LA). The new Seattle-based studio founded by Marcus Lehto (best known for his leading role in the series Halo), meanwhile, is working on world building and narrative within the Battlefield franchise. EA has indicated that each of the studios involved are working on a new “experience” in the Battlefield universe. This does not explicitly mean that all these projects will take the form of games: the terminology of “experiences”Allows for some ample room for interpretation.

“We intend to build a battlefield universe, one with more projects interconnected with the player at the center, ”said Zampella. “We plan to grow Battlefield and bring players together across various experiences and business models, including our next Battlefield Mobile coming in 2022 from Alex Seropian and Industrial Toys.”
