Bitdefender announced the availability of a new one Universal decryptor for REvil / Sodinokibi ransomware. This is a new tool that aims to offer concrete help to the victims of this type of attack. The decryptor Bitdefender Universal is able to restore files and recover information encrypted by REvil ransomware following all attacks carried out until July 13, 2021. Bitdefender has made the new decryptor available for free.
The universal decryptor for REvil / Sodinokibi ransomware was developed with law enforcement
The decryption tool for the REvil / Sodinokibi ransomware was made by Bitdefender in collaboration with a trusted law enforcement partner as part of an ongoing investigation. The company will not provide further information on the project as the investigation in question is still ongoing.
The choice to release the decryptor was agreed by Bitdefender with the law enforcement partner. In this way it is possible to help the victims to recover the data without paying any ransom. It is therefore a fundamental tool for the victims.
REvil is considered to be one of the most prolific ransomware on the dark web. REvil affiliates, after encrypting the data, demand huge ransoms (up to $ 70 million) for the decryption.

However, ransomware developers like REvil always update their code, so this decryptor will not be able to recover files for attacks that will happen in the future but only for attacks that happened in the past.
