From hashtag to global phenomenon up to being recognized in the main national vocabulary. BookTokwhat up TikTok collects all the contents related to literature, it is from today an official entry in the Treccani vocabulary.
The famous encyclopedia – seen as the largest Italian editorial work in the cultural field – which every year establishes the entry of new terms into the Italian vocabulary, has included BookTok (and its derivative BookToker) among the neologisms of 2023.
TikTok officially enters Treccani with BookTok
The entry of the neologism into the vocabulary represents a recognition of the #BookTok phenomenon. A hashtag with over 120 billion views worldwide (of which almost 2 billion for #BookTokItalia).
BookTok’s success also had a major impact on the entire publishing industry. This has in fact transformed and shaped the approach and reading methods of an entire generation, certainly less accustomed to paper, but decidedly more digital. Impossible not to notice how it is now part of the language and everyday life of an increasingly large community of readers, born on the platform, but which now also involves an audience outside the confines of TikTok.
“The section dedicated to neologisms of the Treccani portal – among the most consulted and discussed by users of the Internet – documents emerging linguistic phenomena that have cultural relevance. We were happy to be able to report a neologism such as BookTok, the success of this hashtag shows us in fact that the interest in reading on the part of the new generations, in technologically innovative and highly engaging forms, is still very strong.” reads a comment by Treccani.
