Call of Duty: Vanguard – The four battles that inspired the game

Call of Duty: Vanguard has been out for less than a week and marks the return to the events of World War II: let’s discover the four battles that inspired the title.

Call of Duty: Vanguard – World War II through four epic battles

Developed by Sledgehammer Games, the campaign Vanguard is a deeply engaging storytelling, with spectacular graphics. The campaign is a return of the saga Call of Duty to the events of the Second World War, with a group of selected soldiers. These, coming from different countries and with different backgrounds, find themselves united to face the war. It will be up to them to turn the tide and anticipate what will become the combat of the special forces. The Sledgehammer Games team and its partners are committed to reproducing a real story. A story capable of highlighting people who are often forgotten when it comes to the Second World War.

The four main scenarios and battles of the Second World War that appear in this incredible campaign:

Eastern Front: Battle of Stalingrad

For one of our key characters, the journey begins in Stalingrad. Born and raised in Stalingrad, Polina Petrova is a soldier not by choice, but because she felt the need to defend her country. Using the marksman skills learned from her family, Petrova’s story is a story of revenge for all that she and her community have lost. The real battle of Stalingrad was one of the bloodiest battles ever, with an estimated total of 2 million casualties. After their defeat at Stalingrad, the German high command had to withdraw significant military forces from other war scenarios to replace the losses.

Western Front: Operation Tonga, Berlin

Tonga was the code name given to the operation undertaken by the British 6th Airborne Division between 5 and 7 June 1944 as part of Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings during World War II. The division’s actions severely limited the German defenses’ ability to communicate and organize, ensuring that sea troops could not be attacked during the first few hours after landing, when they were most vulnerable. Players will be able to see Arthur Kingsley spring into action during the Tonga operation in Vanguard.

Il Pacific: Battle of Midway, Battle of Bougainville

Pilot and Task Force One member Wade Jackson performs his flying prowess inspired by Navy Captain Vernon “Mike” Micheel and takes us into the Pacific War during World War II.

Captain Micheel was a heroic naval aviator. He bombed two Japanese aircraft carriers during the Battle of Midway in a single day. This was a massive naval confrontation that took place June 4-7, 1942, six months after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and one month after the Battle of the Coral Sea. The battle, along with the Guadalcanal campaign, is widely regarded as a turning point in the Pacific War.

Nord Africa: Siege of Tobruk, battle of El Alamein

The siege of Tobruk lasted 241 days, with over 3,000 Australian soldiers either killed or wounded. It ended when the army was able to keep the German forces at bay. Tobruk gave a big boost to the morale of the Allied forces: the Germans, apparently invincible, had finally been pushed back. This epic battle and the thousands of Australian soldiers who lost their lives provided the inspiration for Lucas Riggs’ character in Call of Duty: Vanguard. The Siege of Tobruk isn’t the only battle in Vanguard that takes us to North Africa. Players will face a conflict inspired by the First Battle of El Alamein. This was fought in Egypt between the Axis forces (Germany and Italy) of the Panzer Army Africa against the allied forces (Great Britain, British India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand) of the Eighth Army. The battle claimed over 13,000 casualties.

Call of Duty: Vanguard is here November 5, 2021. Vanguard offers Call of Duty fans a complete package consisting of campaign, online multiplayer and Zombie co-op modes. Plus, throughout the year, Vanguard players will be able to immerse themselves in a fully integrated new Call of Duty: Warzone experience, featuring a brand new map, new gameplay, and more.
