Word to the director | Cannes Film Festival: the president of the jury will be Ruben Östlund
Upon the announcement, Östlund enthused:
I am happy, proud and honored to receive the honor of presiding over the jury of this year’s competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Nowhere else in the world of cinema does one feel such a sense of anticipation when the curtain rises on the films in competition. It is a privilege to be part of it, together with the public and Cannes enthusiasts. I’m sincere when I say that film culture is at its most important moment ever. Cinema has a unique aspect: here, we see films together, and here more is expected of what is shown, and the experience is heightened. It makes us think differently than the dopamine rush we do on individual screens.
Cinema and its social role
The Swedish director also wanted to underline how much cinema must also have a social role and a union between spectators. In this regard, he stated that “A good film is linked to collective experience; it prompts us to reflect and makes us want to discuss what we have seen. So let’s see the movies together!”. A really nice idea of cinema, which goes far beyond simply sitting in silence, in a dark room, enjoying popcorn! Now we just have to wait for the announcement of the films in competition, which will be announced in mid-April and, subsequently, the opening of the Festival which this year will take place from 16 to 27 May. The wait is still long, but we at everything we will always be ready to give you new news about it!
