Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye friends, we have to leave each other: the director of Destiny 2, Joe Blackburn, says goodbye to Bungie with a suitcase in his hand
Gaming news is not always the happiest and, every now and then, some game designer leaves the company behind: this is what happened with the director Of Destiny 2that is to say Joe Blackburnwhich he will abandon Bungie. He will take over in his place Tyson Green, part of the company since the release of Myth 2 and a proponent of Halo’s PvP or the exotic weapons of Activision’s previous shooter. As for Blackburn, a “new adventure” awaits him outside the development team. We owe the designer The Witch Queen and Lightfall, as well as the raid structure in his latest direct title. Sure, Blackburn told us about “aces up his sleeve” before, but we didn’t expect this.
It’s multiple days of consecutive internal playtesting that not only generates incredibly valuable closing feedback on everything coming this summer, but also spiritually kicks off a shift towards bug fixing and polish work.

A game director with the office box in his hands: Bungie and Joe Blackburn sign the divorce papers (but Destiny 2 is ready)
“As a Guardian involved before starting here at Bungie, being part of the Destiny 2 team has been the privilege of my life,” the director declares on Twitter. “I am and always will be a fan of the development team for life, believing in what the guys can create within those walls.” This is a goodbye with long notice, actually, but when Blackburn hangs up his Spartan helmet he will do so with a “long break from social media”. About The Final Shape, the much-delayed DLC has reached “one of the most critical internal milestones: a ritual we call end-to-end testing”, or testing phases that last for days in search of bugs. Independence from Sony depends on the release of this final expansion, almost as if it were a sword of Damocles in the hands of Kratos.
This ritual will be especially meaningful to me personally, as it will also serve as a moment to pass the torch of Destiny 2 Game Director to the next era of leadership as I head on a new adventure outside the walls of Bungie.
