Disgaea 6 Complete Review: Zed and Cerberus to the rescue!

Let’s find out together, in this review, to whom we can recommend the purchase of Disgaea 6 Complete, the reissue of the Nippon Ichi Software title released last year for PC and PlayStation console

The classic Japanese strategic role-playing games, in short, those with grids and pawns, as we know, are niche titles. The general public knows this, which regularly snubs them, and also the enthusiasts know that gradually, over time, they found themselves with fewer and fewer deserving titles in their hands. Fortunately, Triangle Strategy has recently raised the bar, which we talked about in a detailed review that you can find here. However, there are few appointments that return to satisfy our desire for pawns and grids and if the title of Square Enix has definitely stirred our soul, apart from a few Fire Emblems and sporadic one-shot titles, the feeling of being left dry There is always. And then there’s him: Disgaea.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is a title that we already told you about exactly one year ago, in July of last year, in a rather verbose review and that you can find by clicking here. Originally released as an exclusive Nintendo Switch, Nippon Ichi Software then decided to bring the Complete version to PC, PS5 and PS4, with some modifications and additions. After trying the PlayStation 4 version of Disgaea 6 Complete for several hours, we sat down and came to terms with the concept that, despite having to write a review, we really don’t know who to recommend this new version to. Let’s see a bit ‘to get to the bottom of it.

Super Reincarnation!

We do not want to go too far in any way, as, in practice, Disgaea 6 Complete is exactly the same game that we scoured through every aspect a year ago on the Nintendo Switch. The daring adventure of Zed and Cerberus is then resumed in its entirety, intent, after a start in medias res, to retrace all the actions that finally led them to defeat the Lord of Destruction. It must be admitted that, after the excellent level reached with Disgaea 5: Alliance of Vengeance, which to this day remains the best chapter of the series, the narrative (as well as everything that Nippon Ichi has created under the aegis of “Disgaea 6 “) is affected by a comparison that is not exactly benevolent.

In the porting operation the exaggerated gameplay was therefore also taken up, not so much in terms of mechanics, which have remained almost unchanged from the fifth chapter, but in the statistics and in the mere “numerical” exercise. The level cap is set at 99.999.999, for one thing, and from the very first beats of the game you will do millions and millions of damage with pieces that, perhaps, are still at level 10. A simple decision devoted to the exaggerated and eccentric style that has always permeated the series and that, in this sixth chapter, they wanted to bring precisely to the nth degree.

There is also nothing unchanged on the fighting front, which will always be played on a grid on which we can have a maximum of ten pawns, which will act decisively by the player and not based on statistics such as Speed. The allied pawns can encircle the enemy ones and face them in combined attacks, which obviously will cause even more damage and will be more than useful to defeat the most difficult bosses. The difficulty level has inevitably been set downwards also thanks to the introduction of Auto-Repeat and Auto-Battle, that make grinding money and experience points so easy to destroy any harbingers of defeat.

In short: Disgaea 6 is a port. For this reason, although we have mentioned again the innovations brought by this new chapter compared to the excellent predecessor, for any other aspect we refer you to the review of the Nintendo Switch version. So what are the additions arrived on PC, PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4? In reality, conceptually, they are very few. A parte i trofeiwhich will surely please all collectors and enthusiasts (and we admit that reaching platinum is not at all easy).

The first (of the two) novelties compared to Defiance of Destiny is certainly the addition of the entire DLC sector released over the past year by Nippon Ichi Software. As often happened with this series, however, the DLCs go even further to exaggerate and simplify the gameplay, making the progression and level up of the characters truly ridiculous. Considering that they will be available practically from the first hours of the game, we strongly recommend that you experience the first run at Disgaea 6 Complete without any buff, in order to at least enjoy the narrative and the little difficulty that characterizes it.

The second change is obviously from the technical side, which we had extensively criticized last year. The two modes available for the game, Performance and Quality, are obviously back. This time, the 60fps of the Performance mode does not blur the overall image, which will therefore be much sharper and less annoying. The Quality mode, however, is no longer so impactful in terms of resolution. Let’s say, on balance, this time the Performance mode is objectively the best in every respect and allows you to play smoothly and without major repercussions on the resolution front. We didn’t see frame rate drops of any kind playing Performance… and we just missed it.

Sincere

We don’t know what else to say about Disgaea 6 Complete and, at the end of this review, let’s go back to the original question: who would we recommend it to? Surely to those who have not experienced its first appearance on Nintendo Switch and have already played Disgaea 5 (otherwise recover that!), As at the end of the day the adventure of Zed and Cerberus is still enjoyable by any fan of the Nippon series Ichi Software. If, on the other hand, you have already stripped its version on Nintendo Switch and you are not particularly interested in DLC … you can also move on.

Disgaea 6: Defiance of Destiny is currently available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4 and PS5.
