Elon Musk announced on X (via The Post) that Grok will become open source this week. This chatbot was born from the work of xAI, the company founded by Musk with the goal of “understanding the true nature of the universe” according to the CEO. A reference to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, while the name Grok comes from another science fiction classic: Stranger in a Strange Land.
Grok will remain available only to version subscribers Premium Of X, the social network formerly known as Twitter. But now much of the code has been made available on GitHubwith a license Apache 2.0 which also allows commercial use. In other words, developers can use this model to power their own products and launch alternative chatbots, based on Grok.
The decision to make the code of AI models accessible is a matter of discussion among developers. OpenAI appears to have no plans to open source its models, which power tools like ChatGPT, GIVE HER e Sora.
