A few days ago we told you about the confusing issue of the ban on AirTags by Lufthansa. The German airline, in fact, had first decided to ban Apple’s trackers from its flights and then had immediately declared the opposite, generating not a little confusion. Now, however, Lufthansa has finally defined the rules for its passengers, accepting the AirTags on board.
Lufthansa: the AirTags allowed by the company
After receiving indications from the German aviation authorities, Lufthansa confirmed that the AirTag they do not represent a risk for the safety of his flights, give a fairly low battery and transmission power. A completely different statement from the one issued a few days ago, when the company revealed that AirTags were subject to ICAO regulation on dangerous goods due to their transmission function, and that consequently they had to be “Deactivated” during the flight.
The German Aviation Authorities (Luftfahrtbundesamt) confirmed today, that they share our risk assessment, that tracking devices with very low battery and transmission power in checked luggage do not pose a safety risk. With that these devices are allowed on Lufthansa flights.

Among other things, the AirTags cannot be turned off without removing the battery from the device, therefore the only possible solution would have been to not associate them with hold luggage. Yet, in recent times, many passengers have used trackers to monitor the location of their luggage, so the Lufthansa ban was immediately inconvenient for everyone. Of the same opinion too Applehe immediately replied stating that the “AirTags” are not dangerous at all and that in reality they “comply with the travel safety regulations of international airlines for hand and hold baggage”.
To confirm the words of the Cupertino company there is also the US Transportation Security Administration, which told the New York Times that AirTags are allowed in both carry-on and checked baggage, as well as other Bluetooth-based trackers from companies like Tile. In short, AirTag and Lufthansa will be a combination that we will continue to see. It remains to be seen for how long.
