Italy is the country with the highest number of speed cameras along its roads, according to the latest estimates provided by Codacons. With a total of 11.130 automatic speed detection devices, surpasses countries such as Great Britain (around 7,700), Germany (over 4,700) and France (3,780). However, the increase in cases of speed cameras dismantled by unknown persons is becoming a widespread phenomenon in various Italian regions, from Lombardy to Veneto, Piedmont to Emilia Romagna. Recently, a speed camera system in Veneto was torn down, and the work of a mysterious individual known as “Fleximan” is suspected.
Official data from the Ministry of the Interior indicates that in 2022 the main 20 Italian cities have collected a total of 75,891,968 euros thanks to high fines via speed cameras, recording growth of +61.7% compared to 2021. Florence is in first place with takings of 23.2 million euros, followed by Milan (almost 13 million), Genoa (10.7 million) and Rome ( 6.1 million). Surprisingly, some places in Salento, such as Melpignano, have obtained considerable revenue thanks to speed cameras on the Statale 16 Lecce-Maglie.
