Godzilla Minus One: Oscar win is a lesson to the industry

The Oscars were held a few days ago and Godzilla Minus One taught us a great lesson. But not only to us, but above all to all those who work in the film sector

This edition of the 2024 Oscars was one big surprise for all of us. There were some awards that were so deserved and at the same time surprising that this edition has become one of the best in Oscar history. There were obviously many awards entrusted to Oppenheimerdirected by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, but the one we appreciated most was Robert Downey Jr, who with his victory concluded a chapter in his history. But now let’s talk about something else equally important, i.e Godzilla Minus One won for best special effects. Not as a foreign film, but precisely as an international film for its cinematic effects.

The victory of Godzilla Minus One at the Oscars proves that you don’t need a lot of money

The main lesson that Godzilla Minus One teaches us is that you don’t need to have a high budget to create excellent special effects. The real key to success in creating excellent special effects it lies in how the money is exploited. Let’s take for example The Marvels, which is the biggest flop the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever made in its 16 years of existence. Marvel had spent more than 200 million dollars for the film and yet it was a total disaster with effects that left something to be desired. On the contrary, however Godzilla Minus One has used a very low budget, it is assumed that it is around 15 million, although the director never revealed how much they spent. Yet, with less than $50 million in budget, they created an amazing Godzilla and the special effects are spectacular.

The great triumph for the King of the Monsters

What’s most surprising, though, is what Godzilla Minus One represents the first time Godzilla won an Oscar. The King of the Monsters has become an icon of cinema, a creature that the whole world and the entire film industry has fallen in love with. If you think of a movie with a giant monster, Godzilla is the first creature that comes to mind. During the course of its existence there have been many films, which have seen different directors put their hands on it and give their own interpretation of the character. Some were great, some were really bad, and some were mediocre, but the fact is Godzilla is a character that everyone loves and that everyone knows. Therefore, seeing such an important cinema icon as the King of the Monsters is a real pleasure, both for fans of the creature and for those of the entire sector. Godzilla’s victory, however, was in style, because it proved that you don’t need a lot of money to make the film’s special effects spectacular.
