Huawei P50 Pocket, unveiled the clamshell folding

Huawei is about to announce a new and highly anticipated foldable smartphone, with a clamshell design: Huawei P50 Pocket. The smartphone is expected to be announced on December 23, 2021 but it has already shown up in the first images leaked online. A device that promises to be full of style and technology.

Huawei P50 Pocket, the next clamshell folding coming for Christmas

Among the first companies to focus on folding smartphones is Huawei, which first launched its Huawei Mate X, and then brought the very interesting one to Italy last year. Huawei Mate Xs. Both devices with a huge screen that folds outwards, as does the Mate X2 arrived in China in February (but not available for purchase in Italy).

But the next Huaweii P50 Pocket promises to be a different device, ready to rival Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G e Motorola Razr 5G with its clamshell design. By focusing everything on the quality of the hardware and on the style, as shown by the very first images unveiled by the Harper’s Bazaar China website.

The pictures show the Chinese actress and singer Guan Xiaotong, who took these photographs for an advertisement ahead of the announcement of the December 23, 2021, when Huawei will present the smartphone in China. Compared to rivals, it appears that Huawei has decided not to reduce the size too much. There is talk of a screen that, once extended, arrives up to 8 inches.

The golden exterior of the Huawei P50 Pocket is interrupted by two circular areas. One for the cameras and the other for a external display, which will show notifications in color but will also serve as a viewfinder for taking selfies with the main camera. An elegant and ambitious solution, which will certainly help the smartphone to stand out: there is no other device that looks like it.

Technical characteristics of a true top of the range

The images cannot reveal the internal components of the foldable smartphone. But several sources have confirmed the specifics, albeit for the official we will have to wait until December 23rd.

The device should have a screen 8-inch OLED and 16 million colors, with a resolution of 2200 × 2480 pixels and 413 ppi. The refresh rate looks like it could be from 90Hz, a middle ground between the standard 60Hz and the 120Hz that we have been seeing in the top of the range in the last year.

The processor should be an octa-core, the Kirin 9000, accompanied by 8GB di RAM e 256 o 512GB memory UFS 3.1. The processor is Huawei’s current top of the range, a product that should be more than enough for any operation, including gaming.

The battery will be from 4.500mAh, with fast charging a 55W. At the moment we do not know if wireless charging will also be present. On the side of the device we should find the fingerprint sensor. All this in a body that will be thick 14,7 mm when folded and 8.2 mm when opened, for a weight of 295 grams. They are not few, but for an 8-inch screen it seems that Huawei has done a great job.

The cameras

Again we have no official confirmation, but it seems that the device will have a four sensor system and the images confirm this. The main sensor should be from 50MP, with an ultrawide sensor from 16MP to accompany him. There are then a telephoto from 12MP for an optical zoom of up to 3x, as well as a periscope from 8MP.

The optics should be made by Leica, as Huawei has accustomed us in recent years, guaranteeing excellent quality both in photographs and in 4K videos. Some voices even carried one 16MP selfie camera, although for shooting it would be advisable to use the main camera with the secondary display. However, an on-screen camera would be handy for video calls.

Huawei P50 Pocket: price and availability

It now seems certain that Huawei will present the new foldable P50 Pocket smartphone at its event on 23 December 2021 (at 8:30 am Italian time), to then launch it in China from 2022. At the moment, no details on the European launch are known, if indeed there will be.

Certainly the device will arrive with the operating system on board HarmonyOS 2.0, based on Android but which uses i Huawei Services instead of Google services. A possible launch in Europe will not change this detail but some analysts have hopes for a launch later in the next year.

At the moment there are no details on the price, as Huawei has never produced a similar smartphone. But we will soon be able to find out all the details, when the company announces the product just before Christmas. We will keep you posted.
