In recent days, Instagram has announced a big “brand update”, which has resulted in a reinterpretation – much more brilliant! – of the App logo. And in the creation of Instagram Without, a proprietary font of the platform, which will be used both in the marketing material and within the App itself. But let’s find out something more.
Instagram Sans, the platform’s unique typeface
Inspired by the App logo, Instagram Sans is a font that “reflects the shape of the glyph and our commitment to simplicity and craftsmanship” – at least according to what the platform reports -. Looking at it in detail, in fact, it shows how a perfect combination of squares and circles – or “squircles”, as Instagram defines them -. As well as an ideal synthesis of pixels and handwriting.
“When designing this new typeface, our goal was to make Instagram Sans globally accessible. We have partnered with language experts around the world to adapt the typeface to global scripts, including Arabic, Thai, and Japanese. We want to support all of our creators and community members who push culture forward to express themselves fully in whatever language they choose. ” So Instagram reported at the time of the launch of the font.
In fact, most of the Instagram Sans fonts resemble those of the Sans-Serif, making them actually quite simple and easy to distinguish even for a global audience. In some characters, for example, only a small bump in the tail of the capital “Q” reveals that it is an unusual font. And it is precisely the extravagant fonts that give Instagram a unique visual identity and characteristic. Not surprisingly, the platform hopes that users will use Instagram Sans for Stories and Reels, so as to stand out clearly and strongly from the contents of TikTok. At this point, it only remains to be seen if the public will really appreciate the platform’s new design – font included -. And if so, TikTok may be short-lived with some creators.
