Leila and her brothers: the mirror of Iranian society in the family described by Saeed Roustayi
As can be seen from the few images contained in the clip; family dynamics follow each other dizzily, within a whirlwind of vicissitudes and emotions. Always fascinated by placing modern family dynamics under everyone’s attention; Leila and her brothers, it’s nothing but a large representation of today’s crystal clear complicated socio-cultural situation in Iran. Indeed, as revealed by the director himself Said Roustayi during an interview:
The family has been a central theme in my work since my first short films. So, in my opinion, Leila and her brothers is more of a sequel than an update. I was inspired by reality, the true story of a large family. It undoubtedly has a universal scope. But it also concerns Iranian society specifically, since the middle class here has only developed in the last few decades. And I mean even in small towns where families started being able to afford a certain level of comfort: owning a car and flaunting their wealth. This development created the inner shell of the company
The plot focuses on the young woman Leila, who spent the years of her life devotedly taking care of her parents and her four brothers. Seen as a large, restless, debt-ridden family; the only possibility on which Leila focuses everything is to start a small business to leave the misery behind her.
