In a statement, Meta said that since March of this year alone, its researchers have discovered “ten families of malware that use ChatGPT and other similar themes to compromise accounts on the Internet” and that it has blocked more than 1,000 malicious links from its platform.
According to the company, scams often involve mobile apps or browser extensions that they pretend to be ChatGPT tools. And while the tools offer some ChatGPT functionality in some cases, their real purpose is to steal users’ account credentials.
Meta also pointed out that whoever manages business on Facebook or who use social media for work were the main targets. Hackers often target users’ personal accounts to gain access to a linked company page or advertising account. This way they are more likely to have a credit card linked.

The solution: Meta Work
To combat this problem, Meta said it plans to introduce a new type of account for businesses called accounts “Meta Work”. This tool will allow users to access Facebook Business Manager tools without a personal Facebook account. “This will help keep corporate accounts longer sure in cases where the attackers start with a personal account compromise,” the company said in a statement. Meta said it would start a “limited” test of new work accounts this year and expand it “over time.”
Additionally, the company is developing yet another new tool that will help businesses detect and remove malware. The tool “guides people step-by-step on how to identify and remove malware, including using third-party antivirus tools” to help prevent businesses from repeatedly losing access to accounts.
