Matthew Perry, Chandler in the popular series Friends, has died at the age of 54 at his home in the Los Angeles area, of unknown causes

In the hit sitcom of the 90s, which aired for 10 seasons, he took part in all 234 episodes. Affable, optimistic and ready to joke on screen, Matthew had recently opened up about his personal difficulties, in particular his addiction to drugs and alcohol in a heartbreaking memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thingin which he shared shocking details about his life and past problems.
The news of his death was reported in the last few hours by the website TMZ and by LA Times. The son of separated parents, he learned early on to use humor to get his mother’s attention. At 14, however, he had his first encounter with alcohol which, he said, had a completely different effect on him than on his friends: while they had vomited, he, lying on the grass, had felt a sensation of well-being. From that moment on, he started drinking and never stopped, not even on set or in public appearances. Even though Perry tried to hide his condition, his castmates (Jennifer Aniston, in particular) were understanding and patient.

The only season in which he had been sober the entire time was season nine, the one in which I was nominated for best actor. Matthew Perry’s addiction worsened in 1997 after an accident on a jet ski: due to some very painful injuries, he began to use an opioid painkiller, Vicodin, and at times took up to 55 a day. In 2018, when he was 49 years old, the actor suffered a gastrointestinal perforation caused by the extreme use of opioids.
Between one problem and another he continued to be an actor. He had participated in Beverly Hills 90210in the first season, then with her friend Aniston she filmed a series of promotional sketches for the Microsoft Windows 95 system. She starred in Apple and Tequila with Salma Hayek, Dylan McDermot and Bruce Willis. He was not only a comic actor, but also a dramatic one. He had successfully played White House advisor Joe Quincy in West Wing – All the president’s men. Clearly overweight, Perry finally attended the Friends reunion a couple of years ago. he had never married, but had a brief relationship with the producer a couple of years ago Molly Hurwitz. Previously he had been linked to the actress Lizzy Caplan.
