Mercedes puts the icing on the sportier version of the G-Class with a special edition that recalls the more than two decades that the off-road vehicle has remained in the sports brand’s catalog, and its business began 55 years ago. And the homage takes shape in the Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Edition 55”, which presents itself with truly unique elements.
Time is running against the Mercedes G-Class, increasingly thinning its stay in the market as a classic combustion SUV. This is one of the reasons why the company has just announced a special and very exclusive edition that will remain on sale until October 2022 and can already be ordered.
The Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Edition 55” plays a dual role. On the one hand, it is one of the longest-running Mercedes models in the catalog, on which the company seal has been printed, proudly displaying the commercial slogan “Driving Performance”. Despite being a true off-roader it is also capable of delivering hair-raising performance like the first model G 55 AMG which was released in 1999.
Exclusivity reigns supreme in the Mercedes-AMG G 63 “Edition 55”
To pay homage to the 55-year history of AMG, which was born in 1967 as a manufacturer of racing engines, the new version therefore comes with a series of details that not only make it more special, but also much more exclusive. For the exterior, Mercedes offers two colors, “Obsidian Black” metallizzato o “Opal White” gloss resulting from the color palettes “G MANUFACTORY”highlighted by the new decorative foil that runs along the bottom of the panels.
In addition, the 22-inch diameter alloy wheels are forged, and show a cross-spoke design, unheard of in the model, which can be finished in matt tantalum gray. Mercedes has not implemented changes on a mechanical level, so the AMG G 63 keeps the performance of the powerful intact 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with a maximum power of 585 hp, which are transferred to the asphalt via the 4MATIC all-wheel drive with a torque distribution in a 40:60 ratio front / rear. All this allows a sprint from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 137 km / h. The exchange is 9-speed automatic. All these “special edition” tricks will have a not very high cost, equal to 17,850 euros, which are to be added to price of the AMG G-Class which on the Italian market starts at 169,510 euros.
