Metroid Dread: the historic Nintendo saga inspired by Alien is finally back!

Today Metroid Dread has finally been released, the last chapter of the historic Nintendo sci-fi saga inspired by the masterpiece of director Ridley Scott

2021 is undoubtedly a year in which the genre sci-fi has found particularly fertile ground within the entertainment media. This is demonstrated by the success of works such as Dune, the director’s latest film Denis Villeneuve taken from the science fiction novel par excellence, or, again, the arrival of Foundation, the TV series based on the book series of the same name by Isaac asimov, another giant of sci-fi literature.

The burgeoning video game industry has also embraced this trend with several titles, but among the most anticipated there is certainly the new chapter of the iconic sci-fi saga. Nintendo, Metroid. Born in 1986, it gave way to the birth of a genre to which it gave part of the name, that of Metroidvania, or those video games characterized by a strong component of exploration in search of enhancements that allow access to initially inaccessible areas, often retracing their steps. The new Metroid Dread was first announced in June of this year and now, after a long wait, the title is finally available worldwide.

Metroid Dread will allow you to return as Samus

Metroid has always been characterized by all the typical elements of the sci-fi imaginary and has often winked at various cinematographic exponents of the genre. In particular, lhe saga has a special relationship with Alien, the cult film of Ridley Scott, which has been a huge source of inspiration on the settings and of atmosphere according to the same Game Director of Metroid, Yoshio Sakamoto. Then there is the archenemy of the protagonist Samus Aran, a space creature by the name Ridley: a clear tribute to the British director. Metroid Dread, new 2D chapter of the series after 19 years, lands on the Nintendo Switch family of consoles with the same spirit and sci-fi themes as always, but also with an important conceptual innovation: fear. This is the meaning of the word “dread” in the title, but also the leitmotif of the whole adventure, which will see the protagonist go from the role of the predator to those of prey, constantly hunted down by scary space robots.

Metroid Dread is a direct follow-up to Metroid Fusion, released in 2002, and concludes the five-part saga dedicated to the mysterious interconnected fate of bounty hunter Samus Aran and Metroid, which began with the first Metroid for the NES. In this game, Samus lands alone on a mysterious alien planet and is being hunted by a dangerous new mechanical threat, EMMI robots as they unlock new skills, players will be able to return to areas they have already visited and discover new hidden locations and power-ups, in classic Metroid style.
