British and world cinema loses an icon, who from now on will dedicate himself to his passion: writing. The September rumors were thus confirmed: the British actor and two-time Oscar winner Michael Caine announced that he will retire after the release of his latest film. In an interview, he officially and definitively declared that he will retire from acting, having starred in more than 160 films in a career spanning eight decades. Rightly considered a British icon, the actor also declared that he has already reached the pinnacle of his career, with which he can consider himself very satisfied.
In his latest film Michael Caine stars in The Great Escaper alongside Glenda Jackson, who died in June shortly after completing her part in the film. The film is based on the true story of a World War II veteran who escapes from a nursing home to attend the D-Day anniversary celebrations in France.
The only parts I can get now are from 90 year old men. Or maybe 85. So I thought: I might as well walk away with all this.
Michael Caine’s retirement from the stage
Michael Caine won Oscars for the 1986 film Hannah and Her Sisters and for The Cider House Rules in 1999, both for Best Supporting Actor. Just recently Caine argued that it was important to include older characters in films. It’s part of the reason he continued acting for so long.
I’m 90 years old and I remember when I was young talking to 90 year olds and they weren’t like me. They were tiny old men with hunched shoulders… And I thought: “I won’t be like that and in fact the situation has changed.”
But after saying goodbye to the world of cinema, Caine he will dedicate himself to another great love of his: writing. After writing several autobiographies, his debut thriller, Deadly Game, will be released in November.
I will write another book sometime, because I really enjoyed writing,” he said. “The problem with film is that you have to get up at 6:30 in the morning, learn your lines in the damn machine, and then come and work until 10 at night. With writing you don’t have to get out of bed: all you need is paper and pen and you can start!.
