glass e Porsche, both family companies, are united by something that goes far beyond a passion for technology and exclusive design. Some of their very successful projects started around the same time, with the realization of a dream. We see it exhibited in the Porsche Pepita Edition installation on the occasion of the Milano Design Week 2024.
Milan Design Week 2024, the installation of Porsche and Vitra
In 1948, Charles e Ray Eames presented an armchair characterized by a seat and back produced in a single piece at a competition at the Museum of Modern Art. In an era when plastic was still considered an innovation, this seat with armrests became part of the history of design. In the same year, Ferry Porsche realized his vision of a sports car by designing, together with his team, the Porsche 356 “No.1” Roadster.
As part of the partnership that resulted in the Porsche Pepita Edition by Vitra collection, Vitra has created three chairs for the sports car manufacturer that will be produced in a limited edition. The special thing about these pieces is that they are covered with Porsche's original Pepita fabric.
The iconic a houndstooth it is made up of small squares connected by diagonal lines. Pepita fabric made its debut as an official optional upholstery for the Porsche 911 in 1965. Previously, it had been offered as a special feature in the later units of the Porsche 356, but only on request and on a very occasional basis. Most recently, the Pepita trim was offered for the 2022 911 Sport Classic – the second of the collectible Heritage Design examples.
What the Porsche Pepita Edition by Vitra collection includes
The Porsche Pepita Edition by Vitra collection includes the “Eames Plastic Side Chair Pepita Edition”, the “ID Trim L” and the “Petit Repos Pepita Edition”. The latter two were designed by the Milanese architect and designer Antonio Citterio.
The chairs will be presented to the public for the first time as part of the “The Art of Dreams” event which will be held in Milan from 16 to 21 April. This new edition of the international installation series focuses on pattern, rhythm, repetition and symmetry, themes that artists from different disciplines will work on inspired by the Pepita motif. Among the latter is the designer collective Numen/For Use, which produced the interactive sculpture “Lines of Flight”.
