In a few days another film from the Monsterverse will arrive at the cinema, which has become increasingly popular over the years. But what makes this cinematic universe so beloved?
Everyone likes action movies, but to entertain you have to know how to do them. What makes a good movie where the focal point is giant monsters constantly beating each other up? It looks more like a wrestling show, but with giant CGI creatures. What’s funny about all this? Another one will arrive soon, namely Godzilla X Kong: the new empire, which represents the continuation of Godzilla VS Kong, also a film directed by Adam Wingard, a director who was able to make Godzilla VS Kong the highest-grossing film of 2020, in the times of the pandemic. Unfortunately for us Italians it wasn’t possible to see that film at the cinema at the time, but in any case the Americans were able to enjoy it there too and those who couldn’t enjoyed it on HBO Maxtoday called only MAX.
The fame of the characters | Monsterverse: why is it so popular?
Let’s start with the assumption that this cinematic universe was not created by just any characters. In any case, we are talking about Godzilla e Kongtwo iconic cinema creatures who have made history and have existed since almost 100 years. The very first Godzilla film dates back to 1954while the first Kong film dates back to 1933, even older than his former rival and ally. Already at the time, both creatures achieved stratospheric success, so much so that years later the two monsters received other film adaptations by other directors. This has continued up to the present day, when the Legendary Pictures and the Warner Bros they decided to enter into a contract to create an entire cinematic universe starring the King of Monsters and the Defender of Humanity.
A hidden world | Monsterverse: why is it so popular?
There is another aspect to consider, namely the how Warner and Legendary decided to tell a story. In itself, Godzilla is a consequence of World War II and nuclear bombs, while Kong was conceived as a god of a tribal community on Skull Island. Simple but working ideas, yet WB wanted to add something more, if not completely distort the background of their stories. Godzilla and Kong, in fact, they are deities, which the human race has revered and always counted on whenever the planet was threatened. Between the two races, however. there has always been a great conflict which then led to a great war, where Godzilla and Kong are the last survivors. The two of them are proof that the Earth it was never man’s, but of these legendary creatures who defend it. Godzilla protects the order of things, while Kong is responsible for protecting the human race.
The beatings we like
Beyond this, it must still be said that this is a cinematic universe without too many pretensions. The Monsterverse has a nice background and adds a lot of lore to the story behind the characters of Godzilla and Kong, but mostly we as viewers go to see these films to see giant monsters beating each other up. I like the fights, there’s little to say, especially when they have an unprecedented spectacularity and epic nature. However, these are gigantic creatures believed to be divinities that fight against other creatures. Regardless of the CGI in the films, the designs of Godzilla and Kong are spectacular and we could watch them fight for hours. The Monsterverse, per se. is one spectacle for the eyes. But it must be said that the history of Hollow Earth, the Great War and everything behind Godzilla and Kong is very fascinating.
