Torino-Lazio: dove vedere la partita?

Navalny returns to the cinema a year after his debut

A year ago, in March 2023, the Oscar-winning documentary Navalny was screened at the cinema, returning to cinemas in Italy almost a year after its debut

The documentary filmed by Daniel Roher, Navalny, returns to cinemas a year after its release date. The documentary had faked the award as best documentary at the 2023 Oscars. Wonder Pictures and IWONDERFULL released the documentary in 2022. The documentary sees the leader of the Russian opposition at the center of the story Alexei Navalnyhead of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, becoming a major opponent of Vladimir Putin. Alexei Navalny fought for his ideas. A year later, the story has become particularly topical, especially after the Navalny’s death in 2021 that shocked the world. Italy requested several times to restart the screenings and in the end the documentary returned to the cinema for event screenings.

Navalny’s story returns to the cinema in the documentary

Daniel Roher’s film is intense, emotional and makes anyone who watches it think a lot about the in-depth investigation from testimonies following August 2020, when Alexei Navalny fell mysteriously ill on a plane flying between Tomsk and Moscow. Navalny was hospitalized after an emergency landing in Omsk and fell into a coma. During the investigation they discovered that there was a poisoning and the film tells exactly how they arrived at the solution to the case. Navalny, throughout his career, had revealed uncomfortable truths about the Russian government and the political figures that compose it, starting with Vladimir Putin. The Russian government then imprisoned Navalny for embezzlement, a crime he never actually committed, as there was no evidence. He never went out again until his death on February 16, 2024. Andrea Romeofounding editorial director of I Wonder Pictures, explained:

When we decided to distribute Navalny in Italy, we knew we were working on a very current story and that due to the protagonist’s own will it would end as it begins, that is, with his murder. The film is a great opportunity to understand something more about what has been happening in Russia for thirty years. The documentary – continues Romeo – is also a highly original cinematographic object, and I believe that the Oscar it won last year adequately celebrates a cinematically unique and important work

The films will return to cinemas on March 22. What do you think about it? Will you go and see the documentary again at the cinema? Or if you haven’t seen it yet, will you go and see it?
