At the center of the story is the protagonist Marie-Laure LeBlanc, a blind French girl whose courage and hope will counteract the violence and destruction of war. Marie-Laure is played by debuting actresses Aria Mia Loberti (discovered by Levy in a global casting involving blind and partially sighted actresses) and Nell Sutton (Marie-Laure as a young woman). At their side Louis Hofmann (Werner), the Emmy Award winner and Oscar nominee Mark Ruffalo (Daniel LeBlanc), Lars Eidinger (Von Rumpel), the Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Hugh Laurie (zio Etienne), Marion Bailey (Madame Manec).
The miniseries is produced by Shawn Levy, Dan Levine and Josh Barry for 21 Laps Entertainment, the production company behind the global phenomenon Stranger Things, the Oscar-nominated Arrival, the hit Netflix series Darkness and Bones, and the Free Guy films and The Adam Project. Steven Knight also serves as executive producer, while Joe Strechay (See, The OA) is an associate producer and consultant on blindness and accessibility.
The synopsis is as follows:
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, All the Light We Cannot See is a miniseries that follows the story of Marie-Laure, a blind French girl, and her father, Daniel LeBlanc, who escape German-occupied Paris with a legendary diamond to prevent it from falling into the hands of the Nazis. Hunted relentlessly by a cruel Gestapo officer who wants to take possession of the precious stone for his personal interest, Marie-Laure and Daniel soon find refuge in St. Malo, where they go to live with a solitary uncle who spreads clandestine broadcasts for the resistence. In this once idyllic seaside town, Marie-Laure’s path inevitably crosses that of an unlikely soul mate: Werner, a brilliant teenager enlisted by Hitler’s regime to track down illegal broadcasts, who instead possesses a secret bond with Marie-Laure. Laure and with her trust in humanity and her hope. Artfully weaving together the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner over the course of a decade, All the Light We Cannot See tells the story of the incredible power of bonds between people, a beacon of light that can guide us even in the darkest of times.
