The introduction of Nissan’s robotaxis marks an evolution in mobility, paving the way for a high-tech future for road transport
Nissan recently announced its ambitious plan to introduce i robotaxi in Japan from 2027, as an integral part of its strategy “Ambition 2030” aimed at drastically reducing emissions and promoting environmental sustainability. This move represents a significant step towards realizing autonomous mobility on a large scale, with the aim of addressing the growing challenge of driver shortages in Japan caused by an aging population. The services of autonomous driving from Nissan will begin in 2027, with plans to subsequently roll out globally over the next few years. The company recognized the need to adapt to the changing mobility needs, and this initiative represents a concrete commitment to providing innovative and sustainable solutions. Since 2017, Nissan has been conducting tests and trials of autonomous mobility services both in Japan and abroad. Among the most relevant initiatives, service stands out Namie Smart Mobilityactive in the Minato Mirai area of Yokohama and the city of Namie in Fukushima Prefecture since 2021. Furthermore, tests of autonomous driving systems have been carried out in cities such as London, with the support of the British government.
Robotaxi: Nissan’s project
The project includes a series of well-defined stages. From this year, testing will begin in the Minato Mirai area using Nissan Serena minivans, with the level of autonomous driving gradually increased to reflect customer needs and reactions. Subsequently, between 2025 and 2026, they will be held demonstration tests in areas of Yokohama, including Minato Mirai, Sakuragi-cho and Kannai, involving 20 vehicles with driver on board.
In 2027, Nissan will start providing self-driving services in three to four municipalities, including rural areas, with dozens of vehicles. Collaboration with local authorities and Japanese ministries will be crucial to the success of the project, emphasizing Nissan’s commitment to adhering to the highest standards of safety and regulation.
