Nvidia Broadcast uses deepfake to make you watch the target

The functionality Eye Contact di Nvidia Broadcast allows you to move your gaze using AI: in this way you will always have the eyes pointed straight into the lens. This will allow digital conference streamers and speakers to read from a prompter or address the interviewer, while maintaining eye contact with the audience.

Nvidia Broadcast, with Eye Contact the deepfake makes you look into the camera

The new feature, introduced with Nvidia Broadcast 1.4, allows you to always focus your gaze straight into the lens of cameras and webcams. In the announcement, the company explains that it will serve “content creators who they try to register themselves by reading notes or scripts” without having to use special hardware or remember everything by heart.

Though it will likely also be used to look at your smartphone or open a tab on your secondary screen during a meeting at work when you’re remote.

Anyhow, Eye Contact uses artificial intelligence to recreate the color of your eyes and also flex eyelids and lashes, in case you were focused too far away. The eyes will be animated, trying to simulate natural movements.

Some of the users who have tried it, such as Mitchell Clark of The Verge, however, explain that the results are more impressive in still images than in motion. Indeed, there would have been some uncertainties that do look unrealistic.

However, Nvidia launched the feature as a Beta: with the user feedback the situation could improve. In fact, it even asked troubleshooters to send a short video to improve the functionality.

Nvidia isn’t the only one using AI to alter your gaze. FaceTime has been offering a similar feature since 2018 and Microsoft also introduced something similar in Windows 11. Then you can find which software is right for you. Or look straight into the webcam when making video calls.
