Let’s say it right now: we will have to wait a long time before seeing this new live action. But it will still be too little for those who have contested this new project, due to its too close temporal proximity to the animated film. In fact, many have said they were skeptical about the release of a live action dedicated to a film released only in 2016. Whether you too are of this opinion, or not, know that the day established for the arrival of this new live action in movie theaters is the June 27, 2025.
This choice is certainly also due to the writers’ strike, which has slowed down or even stopped many productions. The reason why Disney has decided to focus more on projects that are in a more advanced stage of developmentcompared to others, which are in the early stages of development.

But what do we know about this new production? Not much actually; the project had in fact been announced a few months ago by Dwayne Johnson, the original voice actor of Maui in the animated version and who will return here to impersonate the demigod. Also Auli’i Cravalho, original voice actress of the protagonist Vaiana will return, but only in the capacity of executive producer. Many also expected her to return to the set, in the guise of the protagonist, but it was the actress herself who clarified in a video that she would not be the one to impersonate Moana.
When I was cast in Oceania I was 14 and it changed my life in a wonderful way and started my career. In this live action retelling, I won’t be reprising the role. I think it’s imperative that the cast accurately represent the characters and the stories we want to tell. As executive producer, I look forward to finding the next actress to portray Oceania’s courageous spirit, undeniable wit and emotional strength.
Instead it will be up to Thomas Kail direct the project which, according to the first rumors, will take some liberties in modifying some parts of the plot. There are also those who argue that this will be changed almost completely. Which is why, it wouldn’t be a problem to release this new version after a few years from the original one. Who knows if this choice will be well accepted among fans of the cartoon. It is certainly too early to tell and we will certainly have time to find out a few more details before its release.
