Let’s jump into the 90s and early 2000s and talk about Spike e Buffy, the vampire and the huntress protagonists of one of the most tormented, suffered and best constructed love stories of the TV series.
Buffy and Spike’s best moments in Buffy the Vampire Slayer
1. Spike’s monologue
When Buffy’s authority is questioned, the Slayer distanced herself from all friends. Who stays close to her is Spike, who it makes her regain self-confidence confessing the reasons why he is in love with her:
Listen to me. I’ve been alive much longer than you and dead even longer. I’ve seen things you couldn’t imagine, and done things I’d rather you didn’t imagine. 2. Buffy saves Spike from the First
Spike is captured by the First, who plays with his mind continually assuming the guise of his beloved. When the real Buffy manages to get him to safety, that’s enough a look full of love and compassion to make him understand that it is her, the one and only true Slayer.
3. “I love you”
The series finale, “The chosen one“, Coincides with the final battle between the Scooby Gang and Primal Evil. The Prime’s Ubervampire army is wiped out by the purifying amulet entrusted to Spike. The powerful pendant, however, is unstable and so Spike dies sacrificing himself to save the world. Before his death, however, Buffy confesses to him for the first time that she loves him. The vampire, who still doesn’t feel entirely worthy of her, replies by saying, “That’s not true, but thanks for saying that.”
4. The first kiss
When Glory kidnaps Spike to obtain information on the Key, the vampire allows himself to be tortured by the goddess in order not to reveal the truth about Dawn to her. Buffy appreciates that Spike hasn’t betrayed her trust and thanks him with a kiss, whispering to him that she would never forget what the vampire had done for her and for Dawn.
5. The soul
During the sixth season, the relationship between Buffy and Spike is toxic and violent. When the monster takes over the man, the vampire attempts to use violence on Buffy. The awareness of having harmed her, pushes Spike to copy the most important choice of his life as a vampire: to overcome very dangerous and painful tests to get his soul back and be worthy of Buffy.
6. “The best night of my life”
After giving Buffy the strength to face Caleb, Buffy and Spike confront each other over what happened between them the previous night. Spike reveals he’s terrified because for the first time he felt really close to someone:
I’ve been alive for an eternity Buffy, I’ve done everything, I’ve done things with you that I can’t even describe, but I’ve never been close to anyone, much less you, until last night. All I did was hold you and watch you sleep, it was the best night of my life. So yes, I’m terrified.
7. On the porch of the Summers house
In “Crazy in love“, Spike decides it’s time to take out his mortal enemy once and for all. When, however, he arrives at Buffy’s house and sees the girl in tears due to the discovery of her mother’s illness, he puts aside his feelings of revenge and he sits down next to her, without saying a word, but simply by staying close to it.
8. The promise
Prior to the fight with Glory in the Season 5 finale, Spike promises Buffy that if she dies in the battle with the goddess, he will vow his existence to take care of Dawn. Although Spike is a vampire, Buffy trusts him in giving him the life of the person most important to her.
9. 147 day
Willow, Xander, Anya and Tara bring Buffy back to life during the first episode of season six. When Buffy and Spike reunite, the Slayer is still confused and asks him how long it has been since his death. “One hundred and forty-seven days. Today there are 148, but today it doesn’t count”The romantic vampire replies.
10. Buffy is herself with Sike
When Buffy’s friends bring her back to life, they don’t know they took her from Heaven. For the Slayer, returning to Earth is hard and painful, but she can’t talk to Willow and Xander about it, because they wouldn’t understand. For this, she finds in Spike a confidant who can understand her and with whom she can be herself.
Conclusions
The one between Buffy and Spike is certainly not the most idyllic of love stories, it is, on the contrary, painful and complicated, full of ups and downs, happy moments and toxic implications, but it appears real to us because it is built piece by piece. : from being mortal enemies, Buffy and Spike become unlikely allies, then lovers, and only eventually in love. Spike manages to change for Buffy, and Buffy, on the other hand, finds the strength to forgive him and welcome him back into her life. They heal together and learn to respect each other, to love them often and to love each other in a selfless way.
