The dreaded strike by the Hollywood actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, has begun: the cast of Oppenheimer, who left the London premiere, has also joined
The much-announced strike, called by the Hollywood actors union, SAG-AFTRA, has begun in all respects and among the first supporters we find the cast of Oppenheimer who yesterday walked out of the film’s London premiere, making his intentions known only a few minutes earlier. Indeed, Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and the rest of the crew have indeed decided just to walk the red carpet and it is precisely at this moment that they have chosen to express their positions regarding the decision to join the strike and not to participate in the screening of their work.
Oppenheimer’s cast abandons London premiere in support of ongoing strike
Therefore at Oppenheimer’s London premiere most of the cast, including Cillian Murphy, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh, walked the red carpet and then walked away from the event, thus concluding the promotional events and press activities dedicated to film. Emily Blunt he wanted to justify his adhesion to the protest during an interview on the red carpet:
I sincerely hope that a fair deal is reached as we are here to celebrate this film. If the strike is announced, we will all leave together as a cast to show our solidarity. We have to do it by force. Then we’ll see what happens.
Even the Oscar winner Matt Damon he wanted to have his say in support of the entire category, also going into technical details on the current situation:
If our union feels the deal isn’t fair, then we have to hang on until we get a deal that’s fair for all players. It’s the difference between having health care and not for many players, and we have to do what’s right for them.
The absence of the cast at the screening was also explained by the director himself, as well as screenwriter of the film, Christopher Nolanwhich took advantage of the occasion to show its support for the WGA strike (Writers Guild of America) with the following words:
I have to commend the work of our incredible cast led by Cillian Murphy. The list is really long… Robert Downey Jr, Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek and many others. You’ve seen them before on the red carpet. Unfortunately, they have gone to prepare protest signs for the impending strike of the SAG, which will join one of my unions already on strike for months, the Writers Guild.
The strike of the actors’ union, which has joined the already ongoing one of the screenwriters, has therefore begun and will probably create many inconveniences and delays for the Hollywood industry, for the various projects in progress, for the Festivals that will also be held in the next season, as well as for the events promotional. In any case, we remind you of the appointment in Italian cinemas with Oppenheimer for August 23rd.
