News regarding the 2024 Oscars: the Academy has decided that the film Barbie, written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig, will be in the running for the nomination for best adapted screenplay
Ahead of the Oscars, Warner Bros. promoted the film Barbie for the best original screenplay category. In fact, that’s how it was defined by Writers Guild of America. Now, however, comes the Academy’s decision to change the plans. The film will compete for the nominationOscar for best adapted screenplay. The executive committee of the screenwriters branch at the Academy, in fact, is not obliged to comply with the decisions of the WGA. Similar to what happened with Toy Story 3 and Borat 2, the Academy usually establishes films that focus on existing intellectual properties as adaptations. The screenplay written by Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig will allow the film to compete as best adapted screenplay. And this will start from January 11th, when voting for the nominations will begin.
The 2024 Oscar nominees for best screenplay together with Barbie
In the Oscar race for best original screenplay, the favorites change after the exclusion of Barbie. The films are: Past Lives, Life Lessons – The Holdovers, May December, Saltburn e Anatomy of a fall. On the subject of film adaptations, however, we find films such as Killers of the Flower Moon, Povere creature, Oppenheimer. These will compete for the Oscar nomination for best adapted screenplay together with the film Barbie.
All that remains is to wait for the Oscar nominations set for January 23rd, and the Oscar night which will take place between March 10th and 11th. We will find out what the outcome will be Oscar 2024 for Barbie. However, the evaluation as original screenplay for the film Barbie remains at the WGA Awards and the English BAFTAs.
