For the uninitiated, Playdate is an atypical video game console developed by Panic and which can be used via a crank. Unveiled on May 22, 2019, the device came out just a few weeks ago (April 18, 2022). The main feature of the console is its essentiality, with a retro touch and a one-bit black and white display. It would therefore be unthinkable to use Playdate to play a movie, right? Well someone has succeeded.
A Twitter user called jae just yesterday (May 2nd) shared a video of him watching Tenet on the Playdate console. “I finally started looking at Tenet the way Christopher Nolan intended. What an incredible movie ”wrote the user, who rewinds a scene in the movie using the special Playdate crank.
“I’m sure I’m the first (at least I couldn’t find anyone else), but I’ve also made Bad Apple work and this is absolutely the perfect display for watching movies,” jae said in a follow-up tweet. It must be said that the visual and sound experience is certainly not optimal, but we like the crossover a lot.
It is very reminiscent of that electronic music artist who decided to release his album on a Nintendo 64 cassette. Or that user who used a wheel phone to play Doom.
