Pokémon Sword and Shield: Magikarp raid like April Fool’s Day

This time “it’s not us”: Nintendo and Game Freak set up an authentic April Fool with a Magikarp raid in Pokémon Sword and Shield

Although that of April Fool – cross and delight of us videogame journalists – is a consolidated tradition, the fish metaphor is part of the Italian language only; it amazes us, therefore, that Pokémon Sword and Shield has decided to set up just for today a Magikarp raid. The peculiarity of this specimen is that it cannot be captured. In the well-established tradition of “give and take” for which the franchise is known and infamous among its fans, the only Dynamax creatures available today in the Wilds they will be right the useless Koi carp in question, so if you are aiming for variety today you don’t want to play.

Magikarp’s raid in Pokémon Sword and Shield

Below is a tweet about the Magikarp raid by Serebii, the Pokémon-themed site whose founder Joe Merrick he later intervened to specify the bizarre event of the Sword and Shield. Until tomorrow, in fact, it will be only the weak and helpless creature (up to level 20, at least) to make its appearance among the Dynamax creatures available in the game. Merrick, using his personal account, has therefore clarified that the intention to do April Fool’s Day is there, but the Pokémon Company itself organized it. The company, for its part, wanted to add tacitly a small “clause” to the whole.

The first unfortunate to try their hand at the raid have in fact learned the hard way that the inability to capture Magikarp it is beyond the direct prohibition of throwing any ball. In other words, therefore, it is possible to waste even the most priceless Balls (including Master Balls, of course) against a Pokémon otherwise equal to all other specimens of its kind. Even the rewards, although divided according to the difficulty of the raid, are otherwise identical to those of always. We can only assume that the regular rotation of Dynamax creatures will resume tomorrow.
