The Swedish brand of high-performance electric cars Polestar published the report of sustainability for 2023 — and there is some good news. In 2023, Polestar has reduced relative greenhouse gas emissions by 9% for each car soldequivalent to a decrease equivalent to 3.4 tons of CO2 compared to 2022.
Polestar and sustainability: -9% emissions for each car
Polestar achieved these results by focusing on three main areas: the use of materials carefully selected with a lower climate impact, the use of renewable electricity in the production of automobiles and batteries, and taking measures to improve theenergy efficiency during use. Fredrika Klarén, Head of Sustainability at Polestar, highlights the importance of accelerating the transition to electric vehicles by introducing more sustainable and innovative solutions. “Our vision is clearly defined: we intend to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, introducing more sustainable and innovative solutions to continue improving electric cars.”
In 2023, Polestar also enhanced its practices traceability and expanding monitoring of at-risk minerals for batteries. By doing so, it was able to track the lithium and nickel used in the Polestar 3's batteries through the technology blockchain. Additionally, the company has introduced a digital platform to streamline sustainability data collection to support transparency and compliance with standards and regulations.
The results achieved in 2023 and future ambitions demonstrate that it is possible to decouple growth from increased emissions. Polestar is committed to achieving the climate neutrality by 2040, completely eliminating all greenhouse gas emissions at every stage of a car's life cycle, from the supply chain to manufacturing and energy consumption during use.
