Preview Resident Evil 4 Remake: Capcom’s new classic

In this preview we will share with you our first impressions of Resident Evil 4 Remake, the new Capcom survival horror

If you are a horror lover for sure you will be eager to play Resident Evil 4 Remakethe new remake of the historic title Capcom. Now the release of the game is very close, but despite this, the company has still decided to publish one demo to allow everyone to try it in advance. Of course we also played the new trial version of Resident Evil 4 Remake and in this preview we will share our first impressions with you.

A Little Taste – Preview Resident Evil 4 Remake

The demo of Resident Evil 4 Remake unfortunately only allowed us to try a short section of the game, but at least it was a very important part of the original title. In fact, during our test we were able to play freely from Leon’s arrival in Valdelobos to the big clash in the center of the village. During this short journey we obviously extensively rehearsed the gameplay (which we’ll talk about later), but we also got to savor the narrative of this remake.

In fact, these first sections of the game allowed us to witness a couple of cutscenes which, in addition to introducing us to the story, they also reassured us about the atmosphere of the title. Despite being in all respects a horror, Resident Evil 4 has always had a slightly over the top mood and fortunately it seems that the thing has not changed at all. In fact, right from the first bars of Leon it is easy to understand that, just like the original, even the remake isn’t going to take itself too seriously.

Knife Master – Preview Resident Evil 4 Remake

In its day, Resident Evil 4 laid the foundations for what later became the typical mechanics of third-person shooters but, obviously, it is far from modern quality standards. For this reason Capcom has significantly changed the aiming system of the game, making it much more similar to the one used in the remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3. Of course, however, the characteristic elements of the original fourth chapter, first of all the counterattack. By hitting enemies in specific points or by weakening them enough, it is in fact possible to stun them briefly and then knock them down with a lethal close-quarters shot.

The remake of Resident Evil 4, however, seems not to have limited itself only to modernizing the features of the original, but it also added new ones. In fact, during our test we were able to extensively try everything that revolves around the new knife by Leon. In the original Resident Evil 4 this weapon had the sole purpose of inflicting damage on enemies without wasting ammo, while in the remake instead plays a much bigger role. Now in fact, by pressing the corresponding button at the right moment, it is also possible to use it for deflect the attacks of the ganados. Also, if an enemy were to hit you with a grapple, you can use the knife to free yourself much faster.

The parry mechanic is very useful and fun indeed, but of course it comes at a cost. Indeed, in the remake the knife will have durability which will shrink based on how you use it. Stabbing enemies and deflecting basic blows will consume little stamina, while blocking more powerful attacks like chainsaw slashing will consume much more. If the durability were to reach zero the knife will break and until you fix it you can’t use it anymore. This choice seemed very appropriate to us, since in this way players will not have the possibility to abuse this very powerful tool. Plus the new possibilities offered by the knife they could also lead to new types of power-ups and probably a completely different boss fightsbut to find out more about it we will first have to try the full game.

One Step Ahead – Resident Evil 4 Remake preview

Resident Evil 4 Remake is a title cross gen, but despite this he still managed to leave us speechless. In fact, graphically the game is really spectacular, especially if we compare it to its original version (but also to some of the last chapters of the series). In particular we were delighted by the incredible care in the models and the very high quality of the lighting. Plus also the animations they seemed to us to be of the highest quality, but to fully judge we should definitely play longer.

The title also performs quite well in regards to the technical side. During our test (which took place on PS5) we warned of slight frame drops even in performance mode but fortunately they weren’t particularly annoying. Also it must be taken into account that we tried a demo and probably in the full game there will be more stability.

Finally, we would like to mention the excellent way in which the game exploits the DualSense of PlayStations. The adaptive triggers have helped to make firearms more realistic but what satisfied us most is certainly the feedback aptico. In fact, walking on different terrains allowed us to feel some distinct sensations and, if this feature is fully exploited throughout the game, the overall experience will certainly benefit.

Conclusions

Now it’s time for our preview where we pass judgment on the Resident Evil 4 Remake demo. However brief, this test of the new Capcom title has allowed us to better understand some aspects, especially those related to gameplay. In fact, during the demo we were able to fully test the parries with the knife, a very fun new mechanic which helps make the clashes with the ganados even more complex. We were also very satisfied with the graphic sector and the little information related to the narration that we have assimilated. In short, despite some small technical uncertainty, this demo proved to be very convincing and if the full game stays on this line we’re sure gamers won’t be disappointed.
