A short time after the World Mental Health Day (fallen on 10 October); here is the new Italian TV series Netflix, Everything asks for salvation; a different project in a dramedy of excellenceunder the careful and fragile direction of Francesco Bruni. The true commitment in a story mix between drama and humor, dedicated to those considered last and dispossessed; in a loud cry for help and the search for hope towards an unknown and frightening future.

Through the eyes and soul of those who have experienced mental illness on their skin, a direct story without rhetoric able to speak to the generations of young people, arousing a crescendo of emotions and fragility.

Divided into seven episodesthe young man Daniele (played by Federico Cesari) forced to face an introspective journey hard to discover his own demons and fragility. The rediscovery of the true self, repressed and kept hidden, facing the dizzying discomforts and fears common to all young people.

Based on the novel of the same name by Daniele Mencarelli (based on autobiographical experiences and winner of the 2020 Strega Giovani Prize) he is also the author of the screenplay, together with the director Francesco Bruni, Daniela Gambaro and Francesco Cenni. To produce, for Netflix, is Picomedia.

Plot | Review Everything calls for salvation

Does ending up under Tso for seven days (compulsory health treatment) mean being crazy? This is what Daniele (played by Federico Cesari) is asking himself, a twenty-year-old with an excessive sensitivity, hospitalized in a psychiatric ward after a profound psychotic crisis. Awakened without any memory in a hospital bed, he finds himself immersed in a reality that is far from usual.

Surrounded by five roommates with whom he thinks he has nothing in common, pressed by doctors who want to search his brain and cared for by nurses who seem cynical and disinterested; day after day she will live one of the most intense and formative experiences of his life.

Seven episodes, like seven days of TSO; in which every certainty that until now belonged to the protagonist Daniele, crumbles like rocks. An erosion accentuated even more by not listening to one’s request for help.

Discomfort and fear | Review Everything calls for salvation

Already with only two episodes it is possible to trace thea narrative line of the series. Composed by light and shadows, good and evil; a long stroke meticulously outlines every aspect and characteristic of the character. Sometimes more fragile, other times with harder and more marked features; until culminating in an incandescent explosion of emotions and moods.

Daniele is a young boy, who without his will finds himself torn from any certainty and conviction he possessed, contained up to that moment in a fake castle. He watches like this, like an almost unarmed knight; the crumbling of a life and a society that flows in front of his eyes at exhilarated rhythms and times.

The excess and the kaleidoscopic colors of the past give way to the cold hospital room. With a nostalgic look out the window towards the green of the garden and the crystalline sea; we gradually witness the unmasking of a false identity, bringing to light doubts and certainties towards a dark and distant tomorrow.

Here is served on a silver platter, another hot spot in the series: the growing youth discomfort turned into fits of anger and rage. Daniele thus turns out to be a cinematic representation close to many young boys; a staging of the fear of the unknown, experienced with the sensitivity and empathy of a boy facing the crossroads of life.

Fearful of the chains built on distant dogmas, he finds himself facing a path of self-rebirth.

Everything is made even more evident by the clever use photography, scenography and costumes. Visibly opposed (in the environments, in the colors, in the brightness or in the simplicity), they contribute to delineate Daniele’s world even better.

The breaking down of prejudices | Review Everything calls for salvation

A thousand facets come forward in a continuous clash / confrontation with an external world, still not ready to move on a land defined as unexplored. The big lenses of the series bring to light a very thorny question, namely, the blurred boundary between what can be normal and not normal; between what is psychosis and neurosis.

Who are we to judge? Who is truly insane in this world? A question about life posed to face mental discomfort with the right sensitivity and preparation, without leading to prejudices.

So in addition to Daniele, the stories of fragile characters like Mario; Gianluca; Madonnina or Giorgio; pfragments of truth emerge from time to time, with the ultimate aim of digging beneath the hard surface of ignorance. An attempt to give shape and substance to a story based on drama and pain, but still worthy of being known with its own colors.

Characters split in half, tired towards life and the people around, often abandoned to themselves; but ready to make the viewer understand the importance of contact and research with his own inner being.

Conclusion

Everything asks for salvation it comes forward in a very fragile period in the current socio-cultural context; in which many certainties seem to waver. Especially after the latest events; mental health should not be treated as a social scourge to be eradicated, but as a root to be nurtured and grown to create greater awareness and prevention.

In addition, the practice of conscious listening to one’s inner world, without repressing emotions or feelings; it is the first big step to create a more empathic and open way of life towards a more fragile and fragmented existence.

Everyone must be free to express and live himself, without being crushed by the evil of ignorance and prejudice.

A window called empathy
