Archaeologists have discovered several ancient Egyptian tombsincluding one believed to be more than 4,000 years old. Saqqara it is one of the archaeological sites ofAncient Egypt bigger and more important. It houses a vast cemetery, which once served the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis, where numerous nobles were buried. The site also contains what is by far considered the oldest pyramid in the country. Inside the newly discovered tombs, which date back to various historical eras, researchers documented a number of human remains and artifacts during their excavations. Excavations took place from August to September 2023 on the eastern escarpment of the North Saqqara Plateau. The most notable discovery is a rock-cut tomb dating back to Second Dynasty of ancient Egypt. The team of researchers found the remains of an individual in a crouched position inside a box-shaped coffin.

Other finds include burials from the early 18th dynasty (around 1550-1292 BC), from the late period (664-332 BC), from Ptolemaic period (332-30 BC) and the early Roman period (around the 1st-2nd century). The largest burial complex found by the team in northern Saqqara is a Greco-Roman catacomb. The team originally discovered this catacomb in 2019, but were unable to explore it due to rock ceiling conditions and the COVID-19 pandemic. During the most recent excavations, more than 30 human remains were found in the Greco-Roman catacomb.

The team also documented two mummy funerary masks and several terracotta figurines, including some depicting the goddess Isis-Aphrodite. This deity takes the form of the Egyptian goddess Isis to which some aspects of fertility associated with the Greco-Roman goddess Aphrodite have been added. Isis is one of the most important ancient goddesses Egyptian mythology. Famous for her magical powers, she was subsequently also venerated throughout the Greco-Roman world.
