Luca Earnino has abandoned the direction of Scarface: the remake is now without a director, after months of work by Universal Pictures
Director Luca Guadagnino revealed at the event Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival that he abandoned directing the Scarface remake, leaving it without a director to take care of it. The remake, based on the previous film with director Brian di Palma from 1983 (itself a remake of the original 1932 film), is now looking for a new director. To the journalist’s question asking whether in his opinion his films have had a negative impact from a cultural point of view, Al Pacino replied:
Well, I wouldn’t know how to answer you, I don’t know. I look at Scarface and I don’t see it as a metaphor. I understand what De Palma was talking about when we made it. Hip-hop people loved Scarface, I know non-drug people who were inspired by it. It’s about ingenuity that, so suddenly, comes from the bottom and rises, which is why the original was so inspiring for me.
