SEGA removes Sonic games from the store ahead of the launch of Sonic Origins

Starting May 20, it will no longer be possible to purchase the original Sonic titles on the official SEGA store. The removal will include both digital and physical games. This was announced by the Japanese company, which is therefore preparing for the launch of the highly anticipated Sonic Origins collection, which will be officially released on June 23, 2022. The price of the remastered collection will be € 39.99, much higher than the current cost for the individual games. The collection will include remastered versions of Sonic The Hedgehog 1 and 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles and Sonic CD.

SEGA prepares for the launch of Sonic Origins

The choice to remove the original games in view of a remaster collection is not something new in the gaming world. Rockstar Games also did the same last year by removing the three Grand Theft Auto games from GTA: The Trilogy from the catalog. In that case, Rockstar’s backtrack was sudden after the protests of fans who, in addition to having purchased a remaster of GTA full of bugs since launch, found themselves unable to purchase the original versions.

We obviously hope that this is not the case with Sonic Origins, given the climate of expectation that is being created around the June launch.
