Snapchat helps save lives by teaching cardiopulmonary breathing (CPR)

In view of the World Restart a Heart Day on October 16, Snapchat launched a new AR lens to teach the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

According to ILCOR data, cardiac arrest episodes occur seven times out of ten in the presence of other people. However, less than 20% of them actually manage to provide first aid.

During the coronary event, the heart is unable to pump blood to the rest of the body, including the lungs and brain. This means that without prompt intervention, death can occur within minutes. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation – called CPR – is vital in helping the person affected by the illness. The maneuver is carried out through chest compressions that mimic heart activity. The compressions, in fact, help to maintain a regular blood flow throughout the body and can be of vital importance to keep the person alive until the arrival of the medical-health personnel.

How to activate Snapchat AR Lens that teaches CPR

Snapchat’s new AR Lens aims to educate users in learning CPR. To activate it, check that the app is updated to the latest version and look for the Lens in the carousel. Once activated, simply follow the instructions on the screen of your device. Alternatively you can frame the Snapcode which you find below.

The lens will show an injured or life-threatening full-size digital person, positioned within the same room as the user. Snapchatters will then need to go through some essential CPR steps, for example:

  • Check reactivity
  • Check your breathing
  • Ask for help (call for help)
  • Perform chest compressions
  • Practice mouth-to-mouth resuscitation
  • Use the AED
