Instead, choose the best folding smartphones turns out much simpler: what we do they are still few on the market. Some products have not reached the Italian shores. Microsoft launched the promising Surface Duo 2 (which has two screens, but which we feel we can fit into this category). But until 2022 it will not arrive in Italy and will be available only for the business market, not for direct sale to the public. Xiaomi launched his very interesting I Fold, Oppo has recently presented his Oppo Find N. But both devices, at least for the moment, remain quiet in China.

Many still have to arrive, including a Pixel by Google and a iPhone from Apple. But if you can’t wait, there are already some great products that you can buy online or in stores: here are the best folding smartphones already on the market.

The best folding smartphones on the market: Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3

Arriving in Italy on August 27, 2021, Samsung’s Galaxy Fold3 deserves its place among the best folding smartphones ever. A top of the range in all respects, which in addition has a splendid folding screen that comes to measure 7.6 in diagonally. One panel Dynamic AMOLED da 120Hz refresh rate, with HDR10 + and brightness that reaches 1200 nits.

When you close it, you can still use the screen from 6.2 inch Dynamic AMOLED, with the same excellent characteristics as the folding one inside. In practice it is like having a complete smartphone (even if thicker, since it reaches 16mm thick when folded) which then opens in a tablet.

The processor is one Snapdragon 888 5G, the UFS 3.1 memory goes up to 512GB with 12GB of RAM. Enough for the heaviest mobile games. 4.400mAh battery, 25W wired charging but also wireless charging. The photographic department is also very good: triple 12MP wide camera, ultrawide and telephoto. Plus a selfie camera on the 10MP cover and one under the 4MP foldable screen.

The best of Samsung technology with a lot of extra screen, with the crease in the middle of the display that is not particularly annoying. A truly remarkable product, at the price of 1849 euro.

Best small foldable: Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G

Flip 3

This summer, the smallest iteration of the foldable smartphone according to Samsung also arrived: Galaxy Z Flip3 5G. But don’t think that smaller means ‘less’. The Flip has a whole different philosophy than its big brother. Indeed it has a foldable internal screen that once extended measures 6.7 inches, like a medium to large-sized smartphone from 2021. Again, Samsung has brought a panel Dynamic AMOLED 120Hz, HDR10 + and 1200 nits of brightness: a show.

But the phone is smaller when closed (86.4 × 72.2mm, although it remains 15.9mm thick). And it doesn’t have a real external screen. But next to the cameras it has a secondary display where to see colorful notifications at a glance.

By the way, the camera is dual: 12MP wide and ultrawide, with a 10MP selfie camera. The battery is only 3,300 mAh but the autonomy is not bad, also consider that you can take advantage of the fast charging at 15W and the wireless one. The Snapdragon 888 5G and 8GB of RAM allow you to really do everything with this smartphone.

If you don’t need the huge screen of the Fold3, the Flip3 offers everything you can dream of in one of the best foldable smartphones on the market. You can also customize the colors with the Bespoke line. A truly unique style and a price of 976 euro.

Huawei Mate Xs, the first foldout announced remains one of the best on the market

Huawei-Mate-Xs-2

Huawei announced this foldable smartphone in Italy in February 2019, the first of the major smartphone companies to announce such a device. It arrived in Italy almost a year later. A device therefore on the market for more than a year and a half but still extremely valid, on many points of view.

The screen that opens outwards, always leaving both surfaces exposed, can be very useful for using the smartphone even when closed. When opened, the display reaches 8 inches, with a resolution of 2480×2200 pixel (414 ppi) than with technology Flexible OLED of the screen shows really beautiful images.

The photographic department is excellent, with a 40MP main sensor, accompanied by a 16MP ultrawide sensor, an 8MP telephoto and one for depth of field. Also capable of recording videos in 4K with autofocus. The double battery reaches 4,500mAh and the processor Kirin 990 is really powerful, accompanied by 8GB di RAM e 512GB.

A large and majestic device (even a little heavy at 300 grams), it is a pity that Google services are missing, replaced by Huawei Services. The price is 1.300 euro, even if it is not always easy to buy it online due to availability.

Motorola Razr 5G, for purists of the “flip phone” with a folding screen

After launching the first foldable Razr in 2019, in 2020 the company tried again with a 5G device. Nature remains the same: a smartphone that brings to life the snappy gesture of the classic “flip phones” to answer calls and video calls. A nostalgic device but rich in technology.

The internal screen comes in at 6.2 inches, which is now part of the range of medium-sized smartphones. Once closed, find one 2.7 inch color screen for notifications. They are not great displays. The first is an HD + resolution panel only, while the external one only reaches 792 × 600 pixels. But they do their job, no doubt.

The processor is one Snapdragon 765G, accompanied by 8GB of RAM and 256GB. But it is above all the battery that is below average: only 2.800mAh, which, however, should be enough to make it to the end of the day, without exaggerating.

With a price from 1.099 euro, tries to be the “mid-range” of folding smartphones, which however have a decidedly higher construction cost. However, nostalgics of Motorola Razr cannot fail to consider this smartphone, and perhaps a new and improved version of it coming in the future.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2

Released in the fall of 2020, you can still find the Galaxy Z Fold 2 5G online and in many stores. And for many good reasons. The foldable Dynamic AMOLED display from 7.6 inch, with refresh rate da 120Hz, it’s really good. As with all other folding smartphones, if you look for the fold in the screen you will find it effortlessly. But if you’re consuming media (watching a video on Twitch or reading an article on our site, for example) it won’t bother you.

The external screen is a Super AMOLED da 6.2 in, but it’s ‘only’ 60Hz. The processor is one Snapdragon 865+, accompanied by 12GB RAM e 256GB. Which is a great processor, but of an older generation than the 888 seen in the Fold3. But the battery from 4.500mAh is slightly larger than the successor, 25W fast charging is the same (like 11W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse charge). The cameras are also really good.

If you have no spending limits, this year’s model is the best version and does not cost much more than the € 1750 which you find the Fold2 basic. But after a year you can also find it refurbished or in promotion with prices just over 1000 euros, making you save a lot for this technology.

There aren’t many foldable smartphones on the market at the moment and finding the best ones isn’t difficult. Now you just have to choose whether to launch into this new technology, becoming a god early adopter, or wait for the arrival of new models. This is a rapidly expanding market and we hope to be able to update this list soon.
