The first retro game emulators arrive on iPhone

After the opening by Apple, i first retro game emulators are coming to iPhone: There are already a couple on the iOS App Store. The change in the rules of Cupertino's digital store opens up a new possibility for fans of old (and unforgotten) video games.

iPhone emulators: the first retro games arrive on the App Store

The first ones have already arrived. As AppleInsider reports (via TechRadar), enthusiasts can already use two emulators on their iPhone: Emu64 XLdedicated to the Commodore 64, e term, which allows you to play Game Boy Advance and Game Boy Color titles. Both apps are free to download on iPhone and iPad, with no in-app purchases.

Emulators allow you to load compatible game files, run as if you were using the original hardware. For playing without violating copyright of whoever created and produced the games, you need to have an original copy of the titles and extract the files from there. And the issue still remains rather complex from a legal point of view: play with the original hardware it remains the safest solution, as well as the best according to purists.

While emulators are widely used on Android, they have been absent on iOS until now. Apple changed its App Review Guidelines earlier this month, likely due to crescentsthe pressures received in the United States and the European Union regarding authorized third-party software on your devices.

More emulators coming soon

Apple has emphasized that those who emulate become responsible for all software loaded into them and they must comply with all applicable laws in the regions of use. In other words, if you violate copyright, the responsibility lies with you. And it doesn't mean that the producers of the original games won't sue those who produce the emulating software, forcing them to remove it from the store.

But, if it works on iOS like it does on Android (or Windows for PCs), we can expect lots of new apps in this field in the coming weeks. There are already many software open source that act as emulators, and there will be no shortage of manufacturers ready to bring them to the iPhone (after adding some advertising).
