We are talking about The Head of the Family, a film by Omar El Zohairy which will arrive in Italian cinemas thanks to Wanted Cinema starting next March 16th. The film has already won numerous awards, including Best Film at the Semaine de la Critique of the Cannes Film Festival 2021, Grand Jury Prize at the Turin Film Festival 2021, Best International Film at the Calgary International Film Festival in Canada and Best Film at the Roberto Rossellini Awards of China’s Pingyao International Film Festival. The Head of the Family (original title: Feathers) is a curious feature film and directorial debut by the Egyptian Omar El Zohairy.
The synopsis is as follows:
During a birthday party at the house, a spell goes wrong and the father of a modest Egyptian family, a bossy and brutal man, is turned into a chicken. Between surreal tones and unexpected events, the film tells the difficult path of female emancipation in patriarchal Egypt, in which the mother – whose life was previously entirely dedicated to caring for her husband and son – becomes decisive in taking matters into her own hands and to provide for her family on her own, battling against a society that shows no empathy for her plight.
