The LEGO Group presents the new LEGO Ideas Typewriter set, designed to make budding writers and fans of all things vintage happy
Designed by the LEGO fan Steve Guinness of Chester in the United Kingdom, who proposed his project through the platform LEGO Ideas, the set LEGO Ideas Typewriter it harks back to a contemporary model of a vintage typewriter, similar to the one also used by LEGO Group founder Ole Kirk Christiansen.
Ingeniously designed to reproduce the function and feel of a classic typewriter, the LEGO Ideas Typewriter features a central character bar that rises each time a key is pressed, is connected to a carriage that moves as you write and has a cylinder that can be fed with real paper.
Recalling the long-lost art of letter writing, this premium quality set is also accompanied by a letter written and signed by Thomas Kirk Kristiansen, President of the LEGO Group and member of the fourth generation of the family, who still owns the company today.
The new LEGO Ideas Typewriter set is coming
The initial idea of the typewriter was born from the project of the LEGO fan Steve Guinness presented on the LEGO Ideas platform, a LEGO initiative that takes new ideas born of the imagination and voted on by fans and turns them into reality. Steve Guinness stated, about the project:
I wanted to create something completely different from anything LEGO had ever done before, showing that, with LEGO, you can really do anything. First, I bought a vintage typewriter to read up on, then I played with the bricks and the mechanism until I was happy with the project. I hope this set brings back fond memories of adult fans like me and inspires wonder and curiosity in younger fans, who may never have seen a real typewriter!
The first typewriters date back to the early 18th century, but Steve’s project, developed by the LEGO design team, harks back to modern typewriters of the 20th century, which are still objects of worship today. Federico Begher, VP Global Marketing of the LEGO Group, then commented:
It’s not hard to imagine why vintage typewriters enjoy such enduring appeal and it’s totally understandable that Steve’s incredible replica has been so successful on the LEGO Ideas platform. For many, taking refuge from a hyper-connected world in the simplicity of a typewriter is an experience very similar to the thought process of building with LEGO bricks. Here, we then have a LEGO set that combines these two worlds without difficulty, and we’re sure LEGO fans will be proud to display the LEGO Ideas Typewriter in their homes, just like its real-life counterparts.
