Robert Downey Jr. is unrecognizable in the first trailer for Park Chan-wook’s The Sympathizer miniseries, airing on HBO since 2024
The spy thriller The Sympathizer is the TV adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen and will see Robert Downey Jr. as the protagonist. The actor shows himself in the first trailer of the series that will arrive on HBO in 2024, and is truly unrecognizable. Co-showrunners of the series are Park Chan-wook (Old Boy, Decision to Leave) e Don McKellarwith the former also directing the first three episodes.
Among the many innovations shown by Warner Bros. Discovery during the press event for the presentation of the new video streaming service Max, there is also the primo trailer of The Sympathizer, the miniseries adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. It seems that Robert Downey Jr. is playing more roles in the series, but we don’t know many other details about the series, arriving next year.
The plot and trailer of The Sympathizer
The Sympathizer (in Italy known under the title Il Sympathizer edited by Neri Pozza) is a spy thriller novel but also a satirical story about the efforts made by a Communist spy, half French and half Vietnamese, during the final days of the Vietnam War and his subsequent exile to the United States. In the cast of the miniseries will be present Hoa Xuande (Cowboy Bebop) as the spy at the center of the story, Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) una femminista asioamericana, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Vy Le, Alan Trong, Kieu Chinh e Nguyen Cao Ky Duyen. Robert Downey Jr. – who is also an executive producer on the project – will instead play several supporting roles, all antagonists representing different faces of American power: a member of Congress, a CIA agent and a Hollywood director, among others.
