From the director’s words we can get a clearer idea of how the work on this new project, which involves him, is progressing Michael Keaton e Winona Ryder. Working on this film wasn’t always a bed of roses, first of all It wasn’t easy to convince Michael Keaton to return as Betelgeuse, because he didn’t feel this desire. Yet the actor slipped into those roles again with disarming ease, an ease described by the director as “a demonic possession!”. For Burton, returning to the set of this new film was a particular emotion, a return to the past:
Before making this film, I didn’t watch the first one again. I didn’t think it would help. After 35 years, the bottom line for me is finding out what happened to Lydia and the Deetz family. What happens to people we see at one stage in their life and then see them many years later? What happened to Caterina? And to Carlo? This is what interests me. This is what gives me an anchor. Where are these people after 35 years? That anchored the emotion and the feeling, as well as being able to work with Michael and Winona and Catherine, and also Jenna [Ortega]. In the end we decided to follow the same idea: no digital effects, but puppets, wires, make-up and the same spirit, with all these actors who are so good at improvising. Working with these people again and seeing them all was very exciting for me. Once again, we return to the old puppets and the same techniques. Back to the good old days.

The interview was also an opportunity to talk about Batman and why a third chapter was never made. According to Burton, the fault would have been the studio’s, which would have gotten fed up with him, claiming that he “had upset McDonald’s, or something like that”. Despite this, the director said he was very lucky:
I still remember the feeling of being the first, of doing something really new: it’s an exciting feeling. It’s amazing that they kept going and this character gets reinvented all the time. But for me, it remains a novel and exciting experience, despite flaws and all, it seemed like uncharted territory to me. Inside, I’m very proud of that feeling.
Upcoming projects
Naturally, having the director available allowed us to delve deeper into his projects. In fact, there was no shortage of questions about Jenna Ortega and on the new season of Wednesday. Burton made it clear right from the start that he wanted to put everything on hold until the strikes are over, but that he will be involved, in some way, as soon as possible. On Jenna instead he stated:
She’s one of the most conscious people, not just as an actress, but in everything, around the camera, on set. He has a truly special talent. And she’s done a lot of horror movies, which I love too. This gave her a special place in my heart. “Oh, you’re making another horror film. Well.”
